There's a racing Merc in the classifieds with water cooled brake calipers - anyone know about these?

Yes in order to avoid brake fade due to boiling brake fluid coolant/water is passed through bores in the caliper to remove heat.

Theres also the more common (in truck racing anyway) water cooled brakes/discs where water is spayed onto the friction surface to reduce its temperature, this is why the front brakes on truck racers appear to steam when their hard on the brakes.

IMHO for 90% of applications your best off going for a larger brake size or different material, of course sometimes this isn't possible due to regulations or practical reasons so supplimentary brake cooling is utilised.
