Ive gone 32 years without any serious injuries, 2 stitches in my knee is about the highlight.

This morning whilst dropping my 5yr old at school I picked her up and ran as it was raining. As I got to the bottom of a slope and on a compression of the back a shooting pain in the middle of my back occured and I almost dropped to the floor. Managed to get her into school and back to the car very gingerly, almist threw up too.

I can just about walk and when I inhale deeply it hurts but almost pain free when sat down or rested. Should I seek some sort of medical assistance or (and im hoping its the latter) have I strained some muscle and just need to rest for a day or 2?

Thoughts please smile and thanks in advance

From experience.... I'd seek out an osteopath (for immediate pain relief), and follow that up with physio or pilates. Forget the GP, they'll either just give painkillers, and/or send you to a physio (after weeks of waiting). Better to pay private, get it fixed quickly rather than wait in agony. BTDT.

Ibruprofen has helped a wee bit, its a bit stiff and sore still but not as bad as earlier. Just going to rest today and see how i feel in morning then will get hold of the osteopath. thanks for your reply.

Another vote for an osteopath, they'll also be able to suggest some exercises to strengthen the effected area and hopefully stop it happening again.

Ibuprofen is an anti inflammatory as week as a pain killer so a good choose if it is just a twinned muscle.

Having suffered with a similar back problem, I personally found that physios do not get to the root cause of the problem. I have been seeing an osteopath now for 6 years and it is spot on. Turns out that I damaged my knee in one of my many motorbike accidents some 20 years ago, with the result that my spine was twisting in compensation. I was putting a stone more on my left leg than my right. This has all been sorted out and my visits are now 6 monthly check ups. It cost a few quid initially, but has been well worth it.
As temporary relief, lie on your back on the floor with your calves resting on the seat of a chair (so you are effectively in a seated position but lying on your back). This can help stretch the muscles in your back gently.

I had almost exactly as you describe when I bent down quickly to tie my little ones' shoe-laces. Did you get the white light? A few weeks later, after trying to cope, I had a very, very hard landing in a Boeing 737 which popped the rest of my disc out and that was me properly well and truly fked.

I would suggect medical assistance now in this case. As it happened with me I started to get the signs of nerve damage within a few days and if you don't catch that it can be serious.

I'm fine now, but I do maintenance exercise and stretches most days.

Another vote to go see an Osteopath, I hurt my back in a similar way and didn't think it was serious. The next day doing something as mundane as getting up from the office chair and my disc slipped pushing on my trunk nerve I could barely move and my bladder seemed to be on free flow. It was agony followed by 6 days on the Severe Trauma Unit in Hospital.

The massage/physio helped more than any of the meds I was given in hospital(and they gave me everything). Now I'm very careful when bending or twisting.
