Really need to get some business insurance sorted out asap. Small Ltd co (I'm director and sole employee), working predominantly in a niche area of IT - point of sale equipment. I integrate off the shelf hardware and software and sell/hire it out to retail and hospitality businesses. So it's all B2B trade, mostly to Ltd companies, but some customers are sole traders. I've no dedicated business premises, work from home, with a large detached garage as a workshop and storage. Typically, I work from home about half the time, and the rest is spent on site (typically shops, bars, restaurants) installing & servicing IT equipment. So I'm often working in places where the general public have access.

I carry a moderate amount of tools, stock, spares in my vehicle. I doubt my van insurance has enough cover for the full value of kit in it, and my home insurance certainly doesn't cover the business's equipment and stock. Main requirement though is for liability cover (just public liability, or should I have other types of liability cover in place)? Anything else I should be looking for? Can I get all of this stuff on one policy, or is it going to need separate policies? Are there any caveats or clauses I should be looking out for with this stuff? Recommendations for where to get quotes from?

If you're working at clients' premises, then you should have public liability insurance, which would cover your liability for injury caused to others whilst working (e.g. tripping over your tools/cabling etc.). You might also consider professional indemnity too.

Professional Indemnity is well worth having and its the main documentation I get asked for as regards insurance from prospective clients.

Hiscox are good with small businesses and have been fair with my small Ltd and their pricing has always stood up well when I've got alternative quotes.

Just be clear what you want. Its often the case that they'll bundle cover. For example I found out I was paying for travel insurance when I only ever get the train and it wouldn't have paid put anything worth having.

Lots of these packages also come with free HR advice which can be useful.
