Open top motoring for the price of a nice dinner

You know when you have just got to scratch that itch. I am dying to get a 911 cabrio but worried I won't use it, and the kids + wife will hate it.

Hence my clever idea to put a wanted ad in the local paper for a "four seater convertible - anything considered".

Having a weekend toy that might not get used at all, and might well leak depreciation right into my driveway with no sign of any return, I was tempted by an a4/330 at about 10 years old for about £5k.

Then popped up a text message on Sunday morning with "I got a Fiat Punto Cabrio, 1999, price negotiable".

Off I went to see a slightly unloved version of a car I always fancied owning when I was at uni. It was pretty dirty, but I managed to haggle the price in half, insure it for tuppence, and just picked it up at lunchtime today.

Drives a bit like an antique shopping trolley, it smokes a bit, and is quite musty inside, but open top motoring is hopefully on the cards for the foreseeable future.

I am tempted to try get it looking mint but worried this 18 year old Italian stallion might not last forever.

I am told there are still 29 on the roads, and I don’t want to know why the rest have quietly disappeared to car heaven.

A couple of pick up photos, including in car park with yellow 306 cabrio from same era.

So let's hope the car seats fit and the kids don’t hate it or puke due to the spongy suspension and musty interior.

Told the chap I bought it from that he can have it back for free if it lasts 12 months. Any wisdom on these cars greatly received.

Hopefully this is a start to build up the NCB so I can then convince the wife that a 911 cabrio is a great family car.

They look like a slipper but I can see the appeal. I think.
