Yesterday I saw something in Spain that I have yet to see in modern Britain. I passed through a village and saw a woman dressed in council work clothes painting the lamp posts. Further along on this road from nowhere to nowhere 6 workmen were completing the entire repaving of a 6.5km road. Further along still, 3 workmen were hand strimming bits of the verge unreachable by the tractors.

It set me to thinking about what we consider “wealth” these days and I have to say I got real pleasure from seeing the beautiful environment these guys were creating.

By extension, schools, the health service, an affordable public transport system which is clean and efficient and social care are also surely signs of the real wealth of a country and these are not possible to quantify in £s, shillings and pence.

They say that Britain is the 4th wealthiest country in the world but where is the evidence?

IIRC Spain gets (or got) some of the largest road grants from the EU.
