Has anybody bought recently and have a view on quality - good value/happy/disappointed etc? Various makes available but all looks much the same at the various strength ratings (I'm thinking mid-range - 265kg UDL per shelf for general garage use?). I need 4-5 units

http://www.tufferman.co.uk

At the moment I can't see much between them and it's coming down to 'tufferman' having the best name :-)

I have two of these, they're significantly cheaper in store.

They are absolutely awesome and I have stacked mine up with tools, wheels and all sorts. I coupled mine up with some sheets of plywood and those 84 litre really useful boxes.

How much is significantly cheaper to save me the ride down?

Watching this thread, I'm after the exact same thing shortly.

I have a four shelving units from Aldi, they pop up from time to time. Galvanized frame and chip board shelves, they are pretty sturdy, not very wide though.

I have some of the big dug ones too, they are better built but from thinner metal, though the frame is pressed with all kinds of ribs and dimples to stop it flexing. Come with MDF shelves.

I have had some from halfords that went back as they were very wobbly, even when loaded up.

Ikea used to do some really good expanded metal shelving that bolted to the wall but when I went to get some they couldn't get any stock, they stopped listing them soon after. They do have some similar stuff in at the moment but I cant seem to find it on their website.

It will really depend on what kind of weight you're going to put on them.

ETA; The Aldi ones are 450mm deep and the bigdug ones are 300mm, I would go for 450mm, at least, if you can, they are much more handy size.

I used the 450mm BigDug ones, no complaints here, reasonably well built, proved durable and they weren't expensive, I'd buy them again if I had the need.

I have used bigdug several times now, always trawl the internet but end up back with them because of the combinations they offer.

We use BigDug in our warehouse and I've got some of their stuff in my garage too. Always happy with the service and quality and even tho I take a look around the 'net from time to time, BigDug wins out simply due to the range they have. I'm confident that I can pretty much always find what I need from them

These are 'The Daddy' smile

Got 4 in my storeroom and they link together nicely. Ridiculously strong - over 900kg PER SHELF!! Simple to erect and take down, really can't recommend them enough. They've been selling them for years and years - so a decent chance you can add another in the future if you want. If you link together you can save an upright, I bought 4 and because mine are put up in 2 sets of 2 I actually get a fifth for free (assuming you don't use all the shelves that is!)

I paid £99 each on offer, I think they are normally £119+vat in store.

I got one of these when they were on offer with c.20-30% off. Very happy with it and feels very sturdy. the shelves take much more weight than the other stuff I was looking at for a similar price.

I considered the Costco one but decided stuff would get stuck in the wire mesh shelves. Depends what you're storing I guess.

Those look identical to the Tufferman units, aside from colour.

I have some Tufferman shelving in the tool shed which is ok but the chipboard is a bit thin for complete confidence, imo. The price was good though.

I've had some Big Dug racking and a workbench for several years now. Not really got anything to compare it too but it's still in great shape. Would happily buy from them again.

Unless there is an offer on those, then these would probably be fine

454kg per shelf is a decent amount for storage

There are also a bit cheaper in store

I've got Big Dug in my garage and shed, it's ok, but the MDF sheets are usually warped and don't sit particularly flush.

That Costco unit looks awesome.

I've got one of these in the garage and I'm impressed with it, compared to my £60 ish Machine Mart set it's bigger, much more solid, and feels higher quality. I think I paid about £60 in store at Costco, and I don't think it was on special offer.

The Whalen stuff from Costco is superb and IME far better quality and sturdier than the £100 per bay types I've had previously

Exactly the same here in my garage (which isn't damp at all).

The units are also slightly annoying to assemble, as getting all the tabs to line up at once can be harder than you expected.

That said, they are pretty cheap per foot.

This. We've got a few of these, very sturdy indeed and they're excellent value in store.
