Hi all, wondering who (if anybody) with a 996 has used a bottle of the wyns hydraulic valve treatment. My question is not really about if it works or not as happy to take a punt on that but is about if it is likely to any damage to my engine ? Clearly I would not want to use it and something happen. Any experience / opinion gratefully received.

Best wishes

Jeremy

What problem are you trying to solve? The idea of putting stuff in the oil to dissolve internal engine deposits doesn't feel all that appealing to me.

I've heard good things about those additives which you use just prior to changing the oil. Think of it like a detergent. You add it to the engine and let it run a while and then drop the oil. The idea being extra crud is cleared away by the additive. The bad news with these engines is that they hold something like 9 litres but when you change the oil you only change about 75% of it. So obviously the remaining 25% is left floating around.

Thanks for the advice and perspectives.

I'm just look at options for trying by trail and error to eradicate a 'tappet ticking' at idle that has occurred since I have had a recent oil change and new exhaust manifold gaskets. Goes away as soon as engine revs beyond idle. Could be introduction of thinner new oil ? , slight gap in manifold gasket (bolts need tightening ? ), spark plug loose or sticky lifter / general engine wear that has materialised with new oil ? It's the first oil change since I have owned the car. Wondering also if a thicker oil as I hear Hartech may or may not advise could be a solution as well? It's an earlier 3.4

Mine is ticking too. I'm just ignoring it but thicker oil might be the way to go. Look here - https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...

Any of the Porsche approved oils is a high detergent oil. (This is true of just about any modern automotive oil.) Unless the engine has never had its oil changed the oil the engine has no deposits to remove.

Have you checked the oil level? Is it ok?

What oil was used at the recent oil change? The same oil that was in the engine before or something else?

BTW, the ticking is probably not oil/lifter related but a leaking exhaust manifold. The manifold wasn't properly tightened down.

Also, since the car is "new" to you you may not have all the car's history and it might have been in for plugs before you bought the car. Thus a spark plug could be loose too.

My advice is confirm what oil was used -- hopefully an approved oil -- and get the car back to the shop and have the shop address the ticking noise.
