I vaguely recall it in the news back in the day when I was at school. Rather than being an embarassment to the RN, I'd have thought the initiative shown by the Pilot might have been applauded.
Then again, IANAP but would be interested in what other people and Pilots / Military / Aviation enthusiasts at the time thought about it!.
