Minding my own business in Holland and Barrett when a security guy frog marches a piece of low life chav scum into the shop. About 18 years old 6 footish, baseball cap, so called sports clothes. Seems he had just shoplifted a big tub of creatine and a big tub of muscle growth stuff. All he could keep saying was that he had just joined the gymn and needed this stuff, zero contriteness. So the manageress was called and told him she didn't want to see him in the shop again and that was it. So I had a chat with her along the lines of he's laughing at all of us. She agreed and reckoned he had thieved hundreds of times before and would thieve hundreds of times again. She wanted to prosecute every time but company policy was to let them off. Now I am not having a go at Holland and Barrett here but unless we stand up to them we are doomed. We have a criminal justice system to keep the low lifes under control, if we don't use it then we cannot be suprised at the consequences. It really is about time we drew a line over which this scum cannot step, we are on a very slippery slope otherwise.
It won't suprise you what the Chav did as soon as he was out of the shop. That's right he lit a cigarette. What's the point of going to the gymn whilst destroying athletic performance with tobacco poisons?

Tobacco poisons only knock of a few percent of athletic performance

If he is going down the gym then fair play, but everything else about his behaviour, as you say, is a sad indication of our society

Its a very effective appetite surpressant - therefore assisting the "gentleman" in question to lose weight.

I had it loads of times when I worked in retail. Once we had a couple who stole CD writers (at the time about £70-80'ish) by hiding them under the baby in their pram They were detained and eventually arrested. I saw them out and about the next day, no doubt about to do the same thing again.

The reality of the situation is that there is no real point detaining the miscreants. You lose several members of staff for (normally) about 45 minutes waiting for the police to turn up and make an arrest, not to mention the time it costs if they do actually go to court for a slap on the wrist, rather than the traditional caution.

Until there is some form of deterrance for these people there is no reason for them to stop and no reason to detain them.

The criminal justice system is ponderous and ineffective that is why it cannot deal with the small offences which make so many areas of Britain so unpleasant to live in.

We need to start from scratch and design a system that provides justice rather than a gravy train for lawyers

I've told you. Install the miscreant in either stocks or Pillory, naked, in the town square from 8 in the morning, on Saturdays, for a time to be decided by local magistrates. There to recieve any kind of abuse by the local populace, short of offensive projectiles, ie bricks, darts, knives etc.

I guarantee the crime rate would drop very quickly.

I have to agree.
