Im looking for something that helps with a healthy digestion (stops bloating/flatulence/etc) and someone has recommended me a liver cleanse tablet thing, with the added bonus of a liver detox.

Will point out I dont drink much (once or twice a week or so), but am getting to the age I should really be looking after myself a bit more so figured if it can do the former and the latter, then its all a bonus.

Is it all just snake oil, or can taking tablets with the following ingredients help detox a liver.

milk thistle
globe artichoke
Schisandra
dandelion extract

Please note I have tried the GP, etc... they just say its part of getting older and if acid reflux is not too bad (get it once or so a month from alcohol/spicy crap) then there is nothing to recommend for gloated/gassy/farty old person symptons.

So tried Rennie and just a tablet of calcium, but got bored of that and figured its better to try probiotics and the like instead.

Happened to mention it to someone and they recommended me something with milk thistle in and the product Im looking at is getting good reviews on the digestive side... (Thompson's Liver Cleanse if you want to look it up).

Any adivce?

Total junk.

Your liver works 24x7x365 and it gets a holiday when you die. You can stop pouring the crap in at the top end - actual toxins like alcohol, but this won't do anything at all.

Bloating/flatulence are fermentation effects, or intolerance. Try removing sugar/wheat/gluten.

As above, all boll*cks.

For the indigestion see if your GP will give you a prescription for Omeprazole, marvellous stuff, acidity gone for 24 hours and you can take them occasionally. You can buy it over the counter now but it's really expensive for whatever reason.

I used to get a bit of reflux / acidity, just used to take Gaviscon to get rid and there were obvious things that set it off - spicy foods, fatty foods, too much booze, etc. I got put on Omeprazole because I take steroids daily for another condition, they're really bad for your stomach so the Omeprazole protects it. Upside is I haven't had indigestion since and can eat whatever I like!

Yes, Omeprazole is good stuff. It also increases your tolerance to alcohol, and you don't get a hangover. beer

Gives my Dad the galloping skitters though. Seems to be a common side effect.

How far have you gone in terms of looking at your diet? I had digestion 'issues' and it took a while to work out the cause was potato. Of course it had to be a favourite didn't it!?! So I eat minimal chips now (still enjoy a packet of crisps). I went through the usually 'more fibre', then cut out dairy, then cut out fizzy drinks, red meat etc. Spicey food do make things more active, but the real culprit is potato. Strange but true.

So take a look at what's going in before going down the route of drugs. our bodies change as we age.

If removing those has no effect, feel free to add them back in and try eating more starches, grains, vegetables and fruit, while cutting animal products, including eggs and especially dairy.

I used to get lots of indigestion, turned out to be something called Heliocobacter Pylori, a stomach bug, cured with antibiotics, but also I have noticed by losing weight I very rarely get it, so if you are overweight by any degree, that has an effect.

We originally thought it was this and I have been tested as it all happened after a bad experience in Egypt.

Before Egypt, it was lager, curries as hot as lava, spicy food the works.

Afterward, stomach hates too much fizzy anything (sparkling water included) and nothing above a tandoori.

I have been tested for lactose intolerance, celiac disease, and Helicobacter Pylori.... All negative.

I am a bit overweight (15 kg to my ideal weight) but not by much and that is being taken care of by gym 4 times a week to get me back into the same shape I was in 1 year ago.

The only thing that was never tested to see if its a side affect of, is a bad case of post nasal drip that I have had for years.

Have you tried cutting out gluten? My brother, sister and I are all intolerant to it and found out after the symptoms became overwhelming between 40 and 50.

Also we've had a blood test for it which came back negative, as it often does apparently.

Symptoms, amongst others, are stomach pain after eating and then a swollen uncomfortable abdomen with all the related "disagreeables".

You could try giving up anything with wheat flour in it for a week and see what happens.

Cut out sugar, you'll stop farting in days and it'll help with the weight thing as an added bonus. Use MFP if you really want to control your diet.

I got back 'on it' and haven't farted since I started controlling my calorie intake again. (Beer excepted, bit it's a price worth paying)

Interesting, I will look at sugar intake.

Generally, Im not touching much sugar except for an odd bar of chocolate.

I dont eat bread if I can help it, includes pizza and pasta.

I do have potatoes, fish, rice (usually sushi), cheeses, meats and greens.

I liked my alcohol but cut that down as Im trying to be healthy like I was again.

Omeprazole made me want to be very violent - stopped taking it straight away, the violent streak stopped within 48 hours, the incessant heart burn caused by the omeprazole stopped a good 6 months later. - Far later than what realized was causing the original problem. (apples)

Ranitidine is good for heartburn, and is found in asda / sainsburys / tesco in the heartburn section.

1. OP's original mix including milk thistle does actually work, I can go in to details but it's complicated.

2. Omeprazole and PPI's have a rebound effect ergo wean yourself off them, they're dreadful. Also create a negative feedback loop that make indigestion worse. It's like having a cigarette every time you cough.

3. Top advice, try this. Buy strawberry kefir from somewhere, Polish shops do it, as does my local sainsbury's in their Polish food bit in the chiller section. I pay 90p a bottle, the strawberry tastes ok, the regular is like semen in wallpaper paste. Shake the bottle well, before drinking. Knock back a bottle of strawberry kefir a day for a week and see what happens.

4. Change diet. Thai green curry once a week with a dollop of coconut oil, can't go wrong.
