BBQ Food help/suggestions
Discussion
Hi everyone.
So, as its my birthday today, i have invited around 16 of the families friends and 8 odd children round for a BBQ next weekend.
First big BBQ i have done. So i need some tips on what and how much to buy.
This is the local Butcher and doesnt seem too pricey (to me anyway!) https://www.ourlocalbutcher.com/
5 x BEEF BURGERS 4 X 4OZ (20 Beef burgers) = £17.50
2 x Cajun Chicken Drumsticks 6 per pack (12 drum sticks) = £7
2 x Chicken Kebabs 4 per pack (8 Kebabs) = £9
2 x lamb Kebabs 4 per pack (8 kebabs) = £11
2 x Traditional Pork Sausages 8 per pack (16 Sausages) = £10
1 x Chilli & Coriander Sausages 6 per pack (6 Sausages) = £3.50
Sides was going to be potato salads, cold pastas..
Any other ideas or suggestions?
I was going to make all the burgers, but i thought life is too short to make 20 odd of them.. I will make the kids small burgers though
Thanks

Cheese for on the burgers, or if you want a little different, juicy lucys
take a beefburger pattie, divide in two or if they are thin use two, in the middle of one crumble cheese, (I also used cooked smokey bacon,) then place the second pattie on top, pinch the edges so nothing can escape and cook.
When you bite in you get the melted cheese.
Seems a far amount of meat to me.

Don't forget something green, even a couple of bags of prepped salad. And, maybe some bread of some sort, couple or three decent baguettes torn up in a bowl.
For the number of people you are feeding run everything through the oven then just flash up on the BBQ else you will be there for hours.

I don't think that's enough - assuming each adult has a burger, hot dog and chicken or kebab, then you are well short..... At the moment, you are at £2.41 per head which seems a little on the low side to me.
My 2 year old will eat at least 2 sausages off the BBQ - I can see the 8 kids demolishing the regular sausages leaving the adults with no hot dogs. Equally, you only have 1 kebab per adult and none for the kids. (similarly for the burgers). In our family all the kids would want a burger (not all would finish it mind) and the older ones would be expecting a kebab as well.
I would aim to have way too much, cook in batches and freeze what you don't cook.
Chicken thighs always go down well in our house. Can't have too many of these and they are good value. pre-marinated, or do it yourself, ras el hanout + chopped lemon + olive oil for >30 mins.
As for sides:
roast vegetable cous cous
pineapple or mango / chili / lime salsa
Homemade coleslaw (red cabbage, red onion, mayo, pomegranate seeds, lime juice + a dash of tobasco, S+P
Bob

Get yourself to Morrisons and by a huge lump of pork shoulder (currently about £2.66 per kg), cover in a prepared rub and stick it in the oven at about 110-120c when you get up the morning. Shred it and serve along side the burgers, you can not get better value for money.
Plenty of recipes on line if you need, slow cooker in apple juice works well too.

Agreed - number of sausages in particular jumped out at me as too few. I wouldn't say you're well short, but at least 16 more regular sausages (possibly 24) would be a good idea. Also as said above, cook in advance in batches to take the pressure off on the day. ETA - If you're going to do pulled pork, which is a good idea, I'd say either do it using a slow cooker method, or cook it the day before, otherwise your oven will be tied up just when you need it for reheating duties - the oven cook on a big piece is 7+ hours.

BBQ Fatties...
For each 'Fatty':
I reckon three of these + some burgers & sausages for the less adventurous and you'll be ok. Add in some corn on the cob and you're sorted
You basically create a 'lattice with the streaky bacon, spread the sausage meat across the bacon, add the cheese and other fillings. Then roll it up. Cook for 2/3 hrs on an indirect heat and then slice to serve (like you would a burger)

Very easy and very tasty!

Agreed, people tend to graze at BBQ's and its always best to have too much than not enough. OK.

I'd ditch the Chilli and maybe the Salmon, stick to meat and breads with the salads and try and pre-cook what you can.
A really easy thing to do is to get some big bockwurst or bratwurst. They're already cooked so on a BBQ your essentially just heating them up and giving them a charring.

A few packs of pre-cooked meatballs from the supermarket or Ikea, thread onto skewers, and put on the BBQ for 5 minutes first turning regularly.
Serve as hors duv, hoars douv, w
es dewv... starters with a few dips.
Allows you to test the temperature of the BBQ, gives people something to snack on why you cook, and buys you some time if the main event takes a bit longer than expected.

If you are after a starter I'd buy a pack of squid tubes (for about £10) - cut in to chunks or rings and then marinade in chilli sauce for 24 hours before. These can be cooked before the rest of the meat when the BBQ has some flame to it.
I always do this and my young nephews will happily eat the lot. For some reason adults are a bit more squeamish. Not sure why as it is fantastic.
