Numberplates legalities

You may have seen my recent posts about bonnet and grill mesh. Well, despite a lot of help from M@H I am still having problems with the 97 split radiator area.
My latest idea involves recessing the number plate 2-3 inches into the opening towards the radiator. Too complicated to explain why, but I just want to know if anyone knows if it would be legal?

I am not intending to change the standard size at all.

Anyone know or know who I could ask?

Had a look at the site and it just gives dimensions of the figures (which I don't intend to change) and does not mention where the plate has to be fitted, so I guess I would be OK.

No, you need the document referred to at the bottom of my post: The Road Vehicles (Display of Registration Marks) Regulations 2001.

I haven't been able to find it on the web, yet, so I'm guessing you would need to buy a copy from the Stationary Office.
