I have a mail list from 10 years ago... I used an old platform. I uploaded these contacts to mailchimp and tried to do a mail list... they say that each and every one has to be confirmed... before they'll allow normal mailouts to occur.

How many people will realistically click their 're confirm' link?

Will all email platforms do this? It's 12k emails so I suppose they're nervous?

Clean your list. If any of these start to see a large amount of delivery status notifications (ie people have left / no longer have that email address) you'll be viewed as spammy which will affect your domain's ability to send email

The ones who want to receive the stuff you want to send them.

Sorry if that sounds harsh but that's why confirmed opt-in is the way the industry is going for this kind of stuff.

There is/was an exception for established business relationships but I suspect a 10 year old mailing list may be pushing that a bit and even then with a service like MailChimp it's their ball so their rules.

It's not that simple though it it... most people will gloss over the confirm button; assuming that; if they've received the email then they're subscribed.

But the rest of what you say; yes very true.

Sorry, 10 year old list? You shouldn't be using it!

Current DPA/ICO advice is that consent "ages" and that you should not be emailing anyone without consent - that includes an email to ask if they'd like to get emails!

With GDPR on the horizon, you should go and read up on current legislation as it sounds like you may be on a hiding for an expensive lesson!

At a technical level - ignoring any moral / ethical / legal aspects...
when you import a .csv list into mailchimp there should be an option to mark them all as having accepted - so you do not need to get them to confirm...

Honestly, you will be wasting your time mailing a list that old. I ran a list a while ago that was 1 year old and got a lot of bounces. Almost as many bounces as opens!

Upto a year you should be okay but really you need to look at a series of warm up emails before moving your subscribers to your main list.
Regarding double opt in, yes I believe most packages will do this by default. I've been told it's as a result of the U.S. legal requirements.
Double opt in can easily be disabled in Aweber under the list settings tab, I'd be very surprised if Mailchimp didn't have the same option.
