Hi

In approx 1991 Mercedes ran a double page advert in some of the car magazines showing what the Silverstone F1 Grid would look like if the drivers brought their own cars...

Inevitably, each owned at least one MB, so there was a full grid of Mercedes.

Does anyone remember the advert and/or can you point me to a magazine that has it in please?!

I know the 560 SEC was popular with F1 drivers; Senna, Prost, Mansell, Rosberg (K) and Brundle all owned them and I believe it was still in production in '91 - Wasn't there also a race with F1 drivers all in 190 Cosworths? maybe they were all given one, although that might have been a few year prior to '91

it was '84. Senna demolished the field, but he was the only guy to set his tyre pressures properly. Each driver kept their car.

It wasn't taken seriously by those involved - and at least one guy just trundled about at the back because he'd already sold the car before the start of the race.

It was a one-off race for the inauguration of the new Nurburgring.

I can't help locating the advert but it does sound vaguely familiar. The reason every driver on the F1 grid drove a Mercedes was due to MB giving huge discounts to F1 drivers. With the strong residual values at the time it was effectively free money for the drivers.
