Very interesting. I have heard of this before.

I seem to recall one or two nightclubs used something not entirely dissimilar in the 1990's - very focused sound so that it was loud on the dance floor, and much quieter elsewhere.

Antisound is another interesting area of study also.

I wonder how far the beam travels? If the intended listener steps out of the beam, does someone 30 miles away hear music?

I believe that Sennheiser did a range of speakers that worked in the same fashion, ugly ers they were. I can see the possibilities for advertising, imagine walking past a shop and being told the latest special offers rather than being blasted by phones for you with shit music from 2 miles away. Yep, not much better.
