Immigration is a Commonwealth matter. Traffic fines are a state matter. Nothing will happen as far as being able to enter Australia. If it is a rental car, then they will have passed your details to plod. If you get pulled over in the future I'm WA, plod may or may not know about unpaid fines.

I had a speeding fine from near Perth about 15 years ago. I didn't pay it, and I got a notification that I am now banned from driving in western Australia until it's been paid. If I ever go back there I guess they might pick me up on it and make me pay the fine before they allow me in - but years after I went to Solomons via Sydney and didn't have a problem

Well, you know, international post can be ever so unreliable... hehe
On a more serious note, my dad got a speeding fine from New Zealand many years ago - on the drive back to the airport! He paid it in case we wanted to return. Of course, NZ doesn't have the state structure.

Sydney is about as far east as you can get in Australia, so a ban in Western Australia isn't that relevant.

I live in NZ, and hired a car in Australia some years ago.

The Oz police did well to track down my NZ address (through the credit card), as I had used my old UK paper driving licence and address when hiring.

I ignored it, and I've been back on a number of occasions since, to the same hire car company - nothing ever mentioned.

It is shocking just how unreliable international post can be.

(I also travel on a UK passport so I need a visa each time, and my surname is unusual).

I certainly wouldn't pay.
