Sold a car with EGR deleted, any comeback on me?
Discussion
My wife had a 2010 diesel Seat Ibiza. It was one of the worst cars we've had for reliability and among the faults were repeated problems with the EGR valve. In spite of regular long trips at reasonable speed and 20000+ miles per year, we had to renew the EGR cooler and valve twice in two years. When it packed in for the third time, I lost patience and blanked and deleted the EGR. I know it was illegal to use it on the road like this but the car drove better, got better economy and passed it's MOT with no problems.
Earlier this year however I sold it to a back street trader, i told him about the EGR delete and he winked and said 'we'll just keep quiet about that I think'.
Yesterday I got a letter from someone who I presume bought the car from the trader. From what I can gather they got a letter from Seat UK asking them to come in and have the 'NOX emmissions fix' (we had similar but I ignored it) , they took the car in and the main dealer has told them the EGR had been deleted and the car was now 'dangerous and illegal'. They are asking me for any info on the EGR delete, ie did I know about it? when was it done? did the trader know about it?
I have my own ideas on what to do about this but just looking for any PH advice.

The sort of person who buys from a trader then takes it to a main dealer tells me all I need to know as to what will happen should you inform them of the delete while in your ownership.
You sold your problem on. Its not your problem any more.
they took to the dealer because it was a free recall I drive a bwm but ill take to a main dealer if there's a free recall other than that i fix my self or take to a independent You sold your problem on. Its not your problem any more.
the fact they tryed it on with a previous owner probes there morons
Well you were honest with the trader/garage you sold it to and they then chose to keep it from the next buyer.
The current owner needs to take it up with who they bought it from. I suspect they want you to tell them you'd told the dealer about it and he then kept it quiet, which he did. Can't think there's any real comeback on your though op.

It was such a crap car I didn't want to sell it privately and feel I was ripping someone off. Since I wasn't interested in trading it in, my only options were scrap it (couldn't afford to), WBAC, or a trader. I was completely honest about the car to the trader and probably sold it for £500 - £1000 less than I could have privately but thought that would be best as my conscience would be clear and I wouldn't have any angry punters knocking on my door at a later date. Hopefully still the case.

You made the choice to pass it on deleted and were honest in letting the trader know the situation. At this point, I think you can say your conscience was clear. What he then chose to do was his concern.I would probably choose to ignore the correspondence - I don't think any amount of careful wording will actually help the new owner without implicating someone else (possibly even you). Best to say nothing and file it in the bin.

Did you keep receipts for any of the work you had done?
Maybe you should suggest to Seat that it was dangerous and illegal when it left the factory and you believe that contributed to your problems with the emissions system, and suggest they cover your bills for the repair and modification and the cost of putting it right for the new owner, i suspect they might not contact you ever again.

I know why they took it there and I also had to take my 5 series to the main dealer for an aircon radiator replacement under warranty last year.
Did I expect them to try and upsell the situation? Yes.
Did they? Yes.
