A bit of advice needed.

I am in the process of selling one of my cars for around 3k. A french gentleman has been in contact and done everything I would of expected him to do with regards finding out if he could import the car to france.

We are perhaps close to a deal and arranging flights etc when he has now asked if he can pay via paypal. I must admit if I wanted to use paypal then I would have advertised the car on ebay but I did not.

I am worried that there is someway I can be out of pocket but I can see the appeal of using paypal for those who use euros.

At the moment he would arrive at the airport at 5pm on a Saturday so no chance of paying the cash straight in the bank.

Should I insist on cash? What do you think? Is using paypal risky?

Tell him to bring euros with him in cash, a figure equal to £

Couldn't he do a bank transfer online? PayPal accounts can be stolen.

Not sure in relation to cars, but theres the risk of chargeback.

Also a common scam on ebay/pp is to pay by paypal and collect in person, they then claim to never have received it. Paypal ask for a tracking number for proof of delivery, which you don't have. You lose the case.

If it were me I would only accept cash.

However small the risk any other way isn't worth the potential grief IMO.

Don't sell a car using PayPal. I very nearly fell for the scam selling a car on here a few years ago.

I agreed a price over email communication without the buyer even coming to see the car. They lived a few hundred miles away and the car was very rare so alarm bells didn't start ringing.

They informed me they would put 4K into my PayPal account and once I was happy the money was in my account they would send someone to collect the car.

All seemed legit, but then I did a bit of googling and found out it's a scam. Basically the buyer says they never received the car from the person who collected it. They start a dispute with PayPal who refund them the money out of your account.

When I went back to the buyer stating I won't accept PayPal I never heard from them again.

Take cash or bank transfer only. If they are that interested in the car they should oblige.

There is no seller protection for items picked up in person
There is no buyer protection for cars

So they can not buy a car and say they never received it, or it was not as described, but they can pay with a stolen pay pal account or claim the transaction on thier account was unauthorised, and you have no seller protection to cover the transaction being reversed.

Cash or bank transfer only for me.

Any (non dodgy) buyer won't have an issue with that.

doggy bank transfers can easily be made and reversed

tell him to bring it in cash and hes coming with you to bank while you deposit it and ask em to run it through
the counter to check for fake notes

or ask him to pay in bitcoin

then you will do paperwork and hand him the car and keys

using papal would be a sign of insanity

No way should you use paypal. Risk of getting payments reversed. Also the exchange rates charged by paypal are quite poor. Far better off for him if he just buys UK £ wherever he can get them cheapest, then pays your asking price in £. That or a bank transfer.

How are they dodgy? I always thought a transfer was irreversible.

How to Reverse a Wire Transfer
Once the recipient's bank has accepted the payment order, the transfer cannot be reversed. If the originating bank sends a cancellation notice to the recipient bank, and the cancellation notice is received before the recipient bank accepts the payment order, the recipient bank will generally refuse the payment order. Should you wish to reverse the wire transfer, you'll be racing the transfer network between the banks to get the cancellation notice to the recipient bank before the payment order is accepted..

Paypal gift only, and even that is a stretch.

Transferwise - they can receive the funds from a credit (or debit) card, which I assume is why he wants to use paypal, if he isn't a scammer of course.

BACS is not a guaranteed safe way of receiving money as accounts can be stolen and the money returned up to three days later.
CHAPS is a much quicker and safer alternative but you have to pay for it.

All other things aside, if you receive any payment via PayPal don't they fleece you of 3% of the amount anyway?

Not Paypal Gift either, you can fund this with a credit card and then perform a chargeback.
