Just read a snippet and was surprised to read that some wheels now have 3 valves.
Any PHers shed some light on what they are for??

cheers

My guess is that it is something to do with being able to adjust the pressure easily at a pitstop. As you know they can no longer change tyres during a race, however they are allowed to adjust tyre pressures. So the air (well the mix they use) needs to be put in their the tyres initially. There needs to be the ability to add some easily, and the ability to take some out easily.

My guess is there is a different valve for each of these.

Wouldn’t it be more about the position of the valve when the wheel stops so it’s easier to access for the mechanic? If you have three then there’s always likely to be one near or at the bottom of the rim when it stops (this would be the easiest access position). It would probably take the mechanic 0.5 – 1 secs to locate it each time if there was only one valve.

From what I remember, 1 is for putting air in "Normally" ie when the tyres are mounted etc, 1 is used in pitstops to raise/lower the pressure and the 3rd is some kind of pressure sensor for the telemetry...I think!
