Hi guys

Looking for a bit of advice... I have recently started a shopfitting/commercial joinery company, being the main contractor and running sites, dealing with subcontractors etc (3 years or so ago, but have been doing it for a job for 11+) it has been doing really well business has been booming, profits and turnover have been doubling year on year, so far.

But I have hit a cross road in my business, I am having to take on more employees/shopfitters, to give the time I need to go and visit sites, meetings, keeping on top of all the extra paper work etc. The only problem I have is that most of my work is through the same franchise company with no really scope of getting any busier through them for the time being, they start days are unreliable and you could end up with nothing for a few weeks/month then get hit with 3 jobs at once that am not set up to cope with for the time being...

I have looked into all the possibilities of trying to tender of other commercial contracts. Am looking for some advice from anyone that has anything to do with this line of work about the best way of going about it to make my company stand out and have a better chance of hearing back and getting on the tender lists etc.

Have also just started an Aluminium Shopfront company as well, mainly to do all my shopfront. its been set up as a sister company so I have the scope to grow that as well, as all the ones around my area are massively unreliable. So I also want to make a move on marketing this and getting work in when am still relatively young and have the drive to do so!

Any advice and thoughs would be much appreciated.

I've come across a couple of these firms.

The first offered free layout drawings via property agents... they then got to quote the fitout.

The second is a fitout firm in Cardiff. No idea how many bottles he gives out at Christmas to agents, but if a sparrow show's an interest in a new nest he knows about it and is on the phone chasing like mad.

How about talking to chains of shops such as McColls newsagents? If you can get on the list as a preferred supplier it could help?

Thanks for the replies.

I did think it was going to be a case of getting on the phone and casing for work, contacts and trying to get a chance for tendering etc.

Is there any websites etc that are worth putting an ad / listing, that are more related to commercial work? I have done all the same steps for personal / domestic work, but commercial is seeming more of an issue/headache just getting your foot in the door never mind getting the work!

I did a lot of work for a restaurant refurb / shopfitting company and they got lots of inquiries from trade mags (Indian Chinese mainly),,,specialised in turning them from dark and dingy with alcoves into modern, light, bright with open kitchens and dining areas, The MD was great at getting the contracts but useless at getting the work done....you would have been an ideal match except this was 20 or so yrs ago.

What I do also recall that many restaurants were family run so if you did a good job there was a good chance of other business..... but they were hard businessman so you had to be on the ball when it came to Xtras etc.

I know of a few companies that are seems to win all the bigger contracts but are always running over deadlines loads for snagging work needing done etc. Its a wonder how they keep getting the work coming in! I guess its who you know more then anything else, its proving very hard just to get your 'foot in the door' at most places!

I have just got a domain name sorted, now its just a case of finding someone to do it that is really good with racking in high on google / SEO

Price? i.e. low to get the contract and rely on getting extras

or brown envelopes
