I'm taking delivery of a new car in a couple of months and would like to know what is the best wax to apply for protection and gloss finish (the car is metallic grey).

I've applied Nanolex and Gtechniq crystal serum in the past with varying results and durability (the amateur versions), but I enjoy going to town on my car once in a while and like the feel and finish of wax (and it's less stressful to apply). I don't really want to stretch to Swissvax crystal rock (I may as well get the car professionally done if I'm going to spend that much) but wondered what might come close.

For a metalic grey you would probably be better off with a sealant than a wax. Or a nano coating if you want something really long lasting.

Could you explain your reasoning, I wasn't overly impressed the last time I applied a sealant to a black car, it lacked the lustre you get from a good wax. Which sealant would you recommend?

If you want a good wax you won't go far wrong with R222.

If you google it's reviews you'll find pound for pound it's unbeatable.

I agree, it gives a beautiful finish, however i t doesn't last too well though. I used to use it when I had the time to wax my car every few months.

I’m a huge fan of Bilt Hamber double speed wax, it costs around £15 so probably one of the cheapest options you’ll get, and as someone above mentioned I’d apply it after a coating of black hole glaze.

Durabilit6 it lasts for a few months.

Ignore the sounds.

20 years washing, polishing, waxing. Bought all the fancy stuff over the years. Picked up some Simoniz wax the other day, cheap as chips, and, liberally applied, it's as good as any of the fancy waxes. Don't be fooled into paying detailing tax.

Just put this on our brand new car about 10 weeks ago.
Still going fine, just a quick wash and dry when it gets dirty and it's still shiny.

How the paintwork will end up looking is predominantly down to the prep work so claying, polishing and then protecting. In most cases the wax or sealant itself is not the only contributing part to making the car look good.

I've always looked at the longevity of waxes and how easy they are to apply. Collinite do a couple of great waxes, my preference being 845 as it's liquid and far easier to apply that 476. Both will give you about 6 months per coating.

I actually really like Dodo Juice Supernatural for how easy it is to apply, in fact all of their waxes are easy to use but it's not cheap at about £65 per pot. Lasts similarly well to Collinite though.

As mentioned, you can opt for sealants which can be even easier to use. Britemax Extreme Elements is a good one that I have used, cheap and very easy to work with.

I got some of this for Christmas: http://www.cleanyourcar.co.uk/sealants/fusso-coat-...

I did request it and TBH it's great ! Beading is lasting months not weeks and it leaves a great finish.

Have a chat with Matt at the Matt Finish or if you fancy a trip to the South West I'd be happy to accomodate.

cheers

I picked up my new car last week and took it to PH-er NicoG - he applied Gyeon Mohs and Dura Bead - loving the result so far, and it is meant to make the paintwork more resistant to scratches.
