Now that Mk2 Jag prices are getting sillier and sillier (even 2.4s are rising), might it follow that Daimler V8 values might start rising? I've seen it with the market for E30 BMWs (yes, I know, not quite the same!).. M3 prices went bonkers and then 325i Sport models (the 'poor mans M3') rose behind them, presumably as buyers wanted an E30 but could no longer afford the ultimate iteration..

Or is that not how the market for cars like these works?

I think you may be right, looking at how S-Type prices have been dragged up as MkIIs got dearer and dearer!

Mind you the V8 Daimler is probably more of a wafter than an XK engined MKII. I still remember being very impressed when my uncle had a Daimler 250 back in the early 70s - lovely car!

And to think my Dad took me to an all Jag banger race in the late 60s at the recently closed Wimbeldon Stadium! eek Mind you it may have done current values some favours!

I hope they do go up, but only because we've got one "in the family" (I bought one for my dad) which needs quite a bit of TLC so the total cost to buy and fix up is going to overtake it's current value soon (not by miles, but certainly wouldn't get it back if we sold now), and I'm struggling to convince the old man it's still worth doing.. frown

I spent seven years selling Daimlers in Berkeley Street from 70 to 77 just as the DG and DR450 were running out. They were ridiculously fast and could out accelerate most sports cars of the day but the brakes were utterly useless. They also had a penchant for cracking the heads around the valve seats. Before the war Daimlers were the preferred transport of British Royalty, their sleeve valve engines making them very smooth and silent. You always knew if you were following a sleeve valve by the faint plume of blue smoke. The sleeve valve V12 was the original Double Six, Corsica made some spectacular open bodies for these. The little 250 V8 was lovely, very smooth and quiet but rather slow, we sold a few to assorted Duchesses who had chauffeurs, perfect car for them!

Daimlers are so much classier than Jags. It was LJK Setright who wrote in a beautifully crafted but pointlessly spiteful sentence that Jaguars were, "clearly pretentious heaps of cheaply made junk masquerading as high performance luxury cars, and ...commercially very successful because they attracted the sort of customers at whom they were aimed." And it was no lesser beard than Jenks who famously had a Daimler hemi engine in his bedroom. The enthusiast who goes for a Daimler, like they that go for a Roller, is really the true gent compared to the chavs wot drive Jags and Bentleys. Long may they stay affordable.

Stereotyping at it's best wink

In period there were obviously very few true gents judging by Daimlers collapsing sales figures.

There are valid reasons why Daimlers are relatively unloved. Pre-Jaguar their range was particularly dated and drab, verging on the ugly.

Post Jaguar their Mk2, usually in auto form, was rather sedate, even when new.

Nothing has changed since they attained classic status.

Daimlers are for old people, and usually smell of death and piss

One of the rarest came up for auction at Anglia a couple of months back and I was bidding for it. A nice car, it reached £8,200 and my mobile lost connection. It was a manual overdrive car, and I really wanted it. Grrr!
