Best car to have as a second car at 18
Discussion
Hey guys,
I have saved up some money to purchase a second car. Circa 3k. I am 18 with 1year ncb. I currently drive a c2 vts daily,
I'm looking at buying a classic/convertible weekend car.
I would be happy to pay up to 2k insure but lower preferred.
I am interested in VW, Porsche mainly but know that's a long shot. Also leaning towards a mx5. Wouldn't mind modern classic etc.
Also value of car could be up to 10k as I could finance one, love 944s anyone got any experience insuring at 18
All suggestions appreciated just want something fun and insurable
Cheers mace

Just make a list of cars then get insurance quotes on a comparison site. What's cheap for one person won't necessarily be for another.
Also you should be aware that you can NOT use your NCB on two cars at once (unless perhaps you have a multi-car policy but I've never found any value from those).

Sticking to the 3k budget, I'd go for a BMW Z3 2.8 or a Z4. There are loads for sale, two seater convertible with a nice (preferably) straight 6 engine.
Not the quickest or sportiest of cars, but a decent little roadster (I'm biased, although mine weighs far too much to be a sports car

)At 18, I'd much rather have 1 decent car rather than 2 rough ones.
The additional costs of a second round of tax / insurance / maintenance could be better spent towards a single car.
Anyway; what about one of these?
cool doors

Find a broker with NCB a mirroring scheme and with certain insurers they will have an agreement to mirror the NCB. If you have a few years NCB and want it available on two policies, it might be worth paying over the odds for one year to get the NCB and then moving the policy elsewhere when your renewal comes through with the mirrored NCB +1.Also you should be aware that you can NOT use your NCB on two cars at once (unless perhaps you have a multi-car policy but I've never found any value from those).

This is good advice. You need a broker rather than online. Maybe the owners clubs of the car you choose will be able to recommend a broker.CS Garth said:
11 responses and not one mentions putting the money into a buy to let. This place is going downhill.
In less he is thinking of purchasing a BTL in County Durham I don't think £3k is going to go very far!Anyhow, what is the appeal of the C2 VTS? Is there a reason for wanting to keep it and add another second car and not sell it add the proceeds to your £3k budget and get something better again?
I've followed Porsche 924/944 prices for a little while and they aren't budget classics anymore, most sellers are trying to punt them on for \at least double more like triple what they were selling for a couple of years ago. I've seen seriously rough examples of 2.5/2.7 944s advertised at upwards of £3k-to £5k that look like they need at least half that money spent again just to bring them up to standard. Fine if you are handy with the spanners, a dab hand at welding and not bad at painting but not fun for someone who'd pay "specialist" rates.
For 2 seaters the MX5 is default choice, closely followed by MR2s (a choice of mk2/3 models) , BMW Z3/4 are also very worth shouts for access to 6cylinder goodness, a mk1 TT Roadster and Mercedes SLK could be worth investigating to if those sort of cars appeal.
Cheers guys, only problem is most car suggested are uninsurable lol. I love Mk1 TT and would happily sell the VTS to get one but looking silly money to insure one. Even looking at mx5 insurance today it is more to insure as a second car for 2000 miles a year than a daily at 10000 miles?
How did you insure mr2 tubo at 19?
Another option is sell my car then buy a newish polo gti, the 1.4 tsi 180bhp. For less than my vts
