Gen 1 3.4 Boxster/Cayman S - Oil Consumptio
Discussion
To alleviate my porsche paranoia caused by reading too much stuff on the internet, at what point does oil consumption move from within acceptable tolerance to indicating a potential problem ?
Lots of posts about 996/997 bore scoring where excess oil consumption seems to be regarded as a primary indicator. Less detailed discussion about the Boxster/Cayman family, other than saying the 3.4 Gen 1.engines can suffer from the same problem.
Peter Morgan's website suggests 1L per 500 miles is potentially problematic; owners manual says 1.5L per 600 miles is acceptable.
Obviously, there will be lots of cars that don't use any oil, and lots that do.
Just curious (he says with crossed fingers).

This. Bore scoping can often prove inconclusive, reality is some light cosmetic scoring may be present and is normal. Whether it is having any sort of detrimental affect is another matter entirely. You could endure 130,000 miles with minor scoring, gauging depth is difficult for obvious reason.
A good thing to do is a compression and or a leak down test too, to see if you get results within factory tolerances. At least then you have some solid figures and not just aesthetics.
Mine went from consuming a litre of oil every 1000 miles to a litre every 300 miles in about 3-4 months and 56k miles to 60k miles. . Cavendish Porsche diagnosed scores bores on mine. I traded it in and would never have a 987.1 again.
I now have an m135i which is an awesome piece of kit but a bit dull in how it communicates with you, I will look at a 981 gts when funds allow.
