Starting to get excited now! biggrin

We've got an overnight ferry crossing from Portsmouth on Tuesday night but are planning to drive down in plenty of time to avoid any last minute stress. We don't want to leave our car unsupervised whilst we wander off to find somewhere to eat and lacking local knowledge, I'm looking for recommendations for somewhere to go and have a meal (even fish and chips are fine) in the Portsmouth area whilst being able to keep an eye on our car. Can anyone help?

If anyone else is travelling down at the same time, you're more than welcome to join us! thumbupbeer

The harbour lights Portsmouth is quite popular. It's a beefeater close to the motorway and not too far from the ferry port

Or go past the ferry entrance and follow the signs for Gunwharf Quay. Should be plenty of parking there and whilst they're all chain type restaurants, if its a nice evening, great to be sat by the water.

Port Solent just to the West of Pompey also easy off the M27 another option and plenty of boats there too!

Edit: just re-read your post. Forget Gunwharf, go to PS, pass the car park and park outside the Chandlery (Force 10 from memory) should be a bit more visible there.

This place is pretty good, walking distance from Gunwharf, there is some on street parking nearby, and a pay and display very close

If you just want fish and chips the Mother Kellys in Portchester is great and you can park outside. However Gunwharf will be fine on a Tuesday evening as it will be relatively quiet. Park on the lower level. There will be spaces you can park away from anyone else (even spots that nobody can park next to you if you hunt around!) and you get a great choice. However A Bar is a good choice as well.

I hadn't thought of this, we're on the 11:30, probably the same as you? We should be there for 8/9PM, think we'll go and have a look for somewhere to eat.

we're doing the same thing - hoping to be in Pompey for around 4-5pm and it looks like Gunwharf Quays has lots of restaurants so will hopefully be able to find one with some nice outdoor space, assuming it's a nice evening of course!

Crikey chaps, Portsmouth isn't that bad, you're unlikely to get your car trashed early evening while eating dinner... :-)

Any suggestions on where I can park a Hummer? Unsurprisingly it's over 2.2m so the regular car park is out, don't know the area at all so any hints for flat open parking would be appreciated. smile

Street View reveals the Harbour car park on Havant st to be open air, so that'll do us - just over the road from Gunwharf as well

Thanks for the replies everyone. We're also going to have to avoid multistoreys as we're going in my lifted Discovery, which also has a roof rack (over 2.2m)...so the shopping centre's out unfortunately.

Are there any decent pubs with their own car park and tables outside / a beer garden? I know I probably sound a bit paranoid wanting to keep an eye on the car but I've had parts nicked from the Landy a couple of times now (including number plates on the way back from Le Mans in 2014) and I don't really fancy a ruined trip before it's even started.

Me and the wife did it 3 years ago and found a beaut but can't for the love of us remember the village or the pub!?!

Please let us know if you find / remember it. smile

Otherwise, the Ship and Castle looks like the lead contender. Will anyone else be about?
