Telling your manager you got a job offer

So following a job offer, I had a chat with my senior bosses and informed them of the job offer (but not saying if I was head hunted vs looking), discussed my career and having a carer plan/sense of direction (as opposed to fishing for a counter-offer). My department is very open to staff going on training courses, so that is good, and was discussed.

However, every year, we have pay reviews (which are generally pay rises), largely dependent on company performance.

My concern is now I won't be selected for one next year on the basis that I have told my manager, or I may miss any opportunities due to the job offer I've made public (my bosses may think I am looking or will not hang around). My immediate team lead even said this (if there is an opportunity, I may not be selected, on the basis of this).

Am I worrying too much?

Why aren't you leaving if they are taking this attitude. Sounds like you'd be better off elsewhere. If they don't recognise someone that wants to progress then it should be their loss.

Agree with elanfan. I've been in similar situations and it's never worked out and regretted not leaving sooner. However, if you're looking and have attended other interviews, then you've already made the subconscious decision to leave.

Question is, is the potential goal new place better paid and have more career prospects?

On the plus side op, I work part time 2 evening/nights pw and while looking for a full time job I saw and applied for one on wed, Phone call on thurs with interview on fri. All good so far offered the job with a start today to see if the new job was for me.
The problem came tonight when in my part time role i had a problem that I had to fix and thus was late finishing.
The new job is a hgv2 driving role and I was due to start at 6am and Im not long in the door after a full shift. (now aprox 3am)
Due to it being unsafe the only thing I could do is send a text explaining what happened and a plea to start on tuesday.

If I like the new job I can leave the part time job that day but I was not willing to risk the part time job by not working tonight on a gamble that going back to hgv2 work after 6 years+ out of it will work again.
my view is if its meant to be it will be and I will get the start on tuesday.

OP you have at least been truthfull and can talk to your manager with a new outlook for your present job, Discuss your aims and work through a plan.
If that doesn't make you feel better then you at least have options and know your skills are wanted and neede elsewere.


ps just got a reply from the new job saying no problems understand and phone them when i wake up.

Sounds like you have a job offer you have no intention of accepting, but are using it to gain an advantage with your present company, which hasn't gone down to well.

I would be accepting the new job offer.

If you don't want the new job sounds like you might have shot yourself in the foot.

Well in terms of remuneration, I'm happy with what I earn and the other job was the same anyway. In fact this job better with bonuses, shares, etc.

I wasn't really looking for a better offer, I'm more interested in the intangible side of a job i.e. getting the right level of experience. I didn't really demand anything but I did have a chat to "reset" my career. I looked hard at the new offer and the technologies I do today and the demand there is in the market for them (not very much).

I'm looking to go into another set of technologies, not very different to what I do today, and then I will assess/see where the company is. That's years away until I am fully upskilled.


My senior manager was fine and pretty open, but my team lead was a bit cold about it.

ATM, after a catch up, it has kinda all blown over. But I do think until you look for another job, it really puts things into perspective about what you want to do.
