Do people ever drive with the roof off but leave the rear window in place?

I'm certain this would require some considerable force but, given the wind turbulence at speed with the roof off, I have this recurring nightmare: I'm bombing along as described above when suddenly the wind rips the rear window out.

[spongknowitallvoice]You don't want to be doing that![/spongknowitallvoice]

Seriously, for the time it takes, why take the risk? We all know people who've lost 'em.

If I'm driving round town (I'm in London), then I don't bother taking the window out. If I'm heading out of town (and hence will achieve speeds well in excess of standstill at red traffic lights) I'll take it out.

I'd say 50mph is what I'd consider the fastest I'm comfortable driving at before removing the rear screen.

With the later larger screen it became less of a problem. I regularly travel roof off, window in up the motorway and I've never had a problem. I have put on an additional layer of velco to ensure a tight fit on the window.

I believe there are problems on tracks & airfields at three figure speeds.

It's Ok up to XXX ++ MPH with the rear screen in, providing:-

A/ The rear screen is the later one that fits properly.

B/ The catches are in good condition & done up correctly.

Above that speed it's best to take it out or it could exit on it's own!!

He sure did... I was behind him at the time. In France, heading towards the German border. Speed was somewhere around the ton - we weren't really going for it at all. Roof was still on at the time for that matter.

Rule I've always heard is >100mph with the top off = take the screen out, or God'll do it for you.

The earlier rear screens were about 8mm shorter in width & did not have the catch cut outs.some photo's

I’m struggling to see how it can blow out. It is tightly tucked in at the top and even if the catches come loose they are held shut by the boot which overlaps the bottom of the window.

Having said that the buffeting is quite bad, even if you open the windows a little to ease the pressure.
