Hi all,

So its time to officially opt out of the company car scheme...

We live in the sticks so would like 4wd, and some poke, budget of £30-40k, petrol, oh and at least 12 month Warranty (assume i will finance some of it, so a dealer car... bangernomics doesnt apply)

Shortlist i had:

Golf R Estate
B8 RS4
Panamera S or older Turbo?!
AMG A45 Shootingbrake

Would love an M5 but residuals have some way to fall and i fear a bum investment

Any others?

Not quite in the same performance league but would something like a 440i X-drive work? (assuming they do an x-drive version, else 430d x-drive)

C43 AMG (assuming tyre skipping has been sorted?)

Hmmm 440i is an interesting call, I do love my BM's - although the Xdrive's seem to ride very high!

The C43 for me could be a little bit like buying the bodykit but always wanting a C63, i'll have a look as the new Merc's are a very nice place to sit

Nice problem to have although I don't get the connection between living in the sticks and 4wd unless it's an off-roader.

I like my Mercs but I'd take an RS4 over a C43

If you can find one then an Alpina B3 with xdrive is well worth hunting down.

Or hunt down a last of the line C63 with the 4matic

Try one if you can. They're really quite good.

I love my Golf R estate and in the same price range there is nothing else I would consider now I have owned it for a year. Fun, fast, stylish, practical, etc etc

A heads up on living out in the sticks and wanting four wheel drive.
Gravel on roads as they disintegrate
mud on road
T-junctions on steep hills
A bit of snow on the road that doesn't get cleared.

Knowing this we got a Z4M Coupe biggrin

Winter tyres will do the same thing but not everyonee wants to swap wheels every time the farmer pulls mud out of their fields and on to the lanes..

OP - You mentioned a second hand RS4 on your list, a Brand New S4 or S4 Avant can be had in budget via carwow.

Well for me, living in the sticks too, having a speedy 4wd car is great for having fun down country lanes and going round corners etc and makes me feel safe when the roads gets a little slippy. I can notice the difference over my previous fwd car

Exactly, and whilst i don't have a huge budget we do have a relatively long, uphill drive so traction in poor conditions is low at best. Im not expecting true off road capabilities, just something that takes the edge off the general winter nastiness and things like gravel and horse poo lol

GLA45, 99% of the performance of the A45 with vastly better ride and ground clearance

should be able to get a demo close to your budget

I have heard nice things about the cockpit, but I don't have it on my version. I have a decent spec and the choice of Dynamic Chassis Control, rear cam and a few others was money well spent. I love the car and even being in an estate I still feel cool. Other than the Audi's, it's one of the nicer looking ones out there. You wont regret it.
