Mexico in a few days - vaccinations?
Discussion
Chaps,
Owing to a spur of the moment decision, I find myself heading out to Playa Del Carmen next Wednesday. After some research it seems as though it's recommended to get a Hepatitis A jab at least 2-4 weeks beforehand - obviously I don't have that sort of time, and the earliest I can get booked in for is this Thursday.
I know there's a lot of knowledgeable people on here - will I still have some degree of protection despite only having the jab six days before I go?
The last vaccination I had was at school I think, and that was for TB (I'm 26).
I don't plan on eating any street food and I sure as hell won't be drinking any tap water. Anyone any experience?

I went exploring just south of Mexico City and having assessed the vaccination pros and cons, I didn't get any..The only thing I did was use insect repellent for sitting out in the night.
I didn't drink the tap water and brushed my teeth using bottled water. Street food was mostly avoided but the fact that everything is fried in grease played havoc with my digestion! Or it could have been the altitude..

I got ill whilst was in Playa Del Carmen, went on a day trip which was kind of a knock off version of Xplor, was actually quite well done, lot of effort and was good fun but the kids called it "sketchy", and it was, anyway had bad guts for a couple of days, came home and every now and then got horrendous stomach pain, got tested for all sorts, every type of Hepatitis, MRI, Endo, Colonoscopy, it sorted itself out after four episodes of this crushing pain.
Theory is my gall bladder seized up, but I do think it was related to going to Mexico and the food I had on the trip, was starving, it was tasty but tepid and served in a jungle setting, eat in the hotels and you should be fine, main risk there is the swim up bars with fat, red English folk sat drinking vast quantities of beer and never leaving to divest themselves of it in a toilet.....

Thanks for the replies.
Should anyone find themselves in a similar position, I went to the doctors for them today - a Hepatitis A and a tetanus because mine was well out of date (!). According to the nurse i'll still be protected. I did get a pretty stern warning to stay away from any wild animals that may bite me too.
I did think that it's fairly low risk anyway because I'm unlikely to go too far off the beaten track whilst I'm there, but for the time and effort it costs to get covered it's not worth the risk. I'll be sure to stay away from fat English people pissing in the pools too.
