Guys, I do loads of cardio work and just back from Oz after 6 months running in the hills (some very high impact on rocks and other concrete) and rowing in the gym. Before I left I noticed when cycling bad pain at the ball of both feet. Had an Xray 2 weeks ago and all normal, now lined up for ultra-sound but waiting for appointment.

I've looked online and because of my extreme activity (one of the causes) I'm 99% certain I have metatarsalgia and possibly from the symptoms I now have (terrible pain at balls of both feet, some numbness/tingling in some toes, some swelling) maybe Morton's Neuroma/Bursitis as well.

I messed up because when I went to the docs I only mentioned the swelling and associated upper foot pain, I thought the soreness at the balls of my feet was just too much work.

Anyway, while I'm waiting for the ultra-sound I'm hoping for some advice on the best orthotic insoles, looking on Amazon there are loads.....Thanks.

see what the scan says, but your Dr Google diagnosis is probably right.

as a starting point for orthotics, get some superfeet orange. Also start calf/achilles and hamstring stetches, plus use NSAIDs if you can tolerate them. make sure your trainers are not too flat , also loosen your cycling shoes.

local steroid injection might be helpful of there is a neuroma (less so for bursitis) - can be done with ultrasound guidance (they wont be able to do this if you are booked for a diagnostic scan - its usually a consultant appointment for guided injection)

Good start, dont forget calf and hamstring stretches. Dont expect to feel better straight away it may be a few weeks before much changes

This is my feeling. Tingling and numbness specifically. Any other seemingly unrelated symptoms? Tirediness, excessive urination?

Might be worth getting some orthotics custom made? I'm a massive over pronator (amongst other moral failings) and finally went to an acquaintance who's a chiropodist and podiatrist. He poked, prodded and took casts of my feet and had some insoles made up from carbon fibre, silicone and cork. Not cheap but didn't break the bank either; the price of a couple of pairs of running shoes. They've brought my ankles and knees into alignment for the first time in my life. I no longer walk like a duck.

Finally diagnosed with Anterior Tibialis Tendonitis and docs principle advice is rest. That said, and before this enforced rest, I'm able to row (Concept 2) and walk (treadmill max incline) with no pain BUT I need to heal so this has to stop. Rehab' advice welcome....thanks.
