It's official.

My monster crank is a bully.

It's eaten another dipstick.

Any idea where on the dipstick the oil level should be .. I felt like Uri Geller when the bottom of the dipstick fell off..

You can just about make out the oil level. About 2.5 inches from the bottom of the stick.

Stick a real dipstick along the side of the engine bay, and use the remains of your dipstick with the chewed end to plug the hole.

Then when you want to check the level, you whip out your long dipstick, dip in, pull out, and replace at the side of the engine.

Alternatively get an SD1 sump that contains an oil level sender, then you can check it even on the move.

Another idea - put it in the other way around then it won't rub off the lettering!

Rick, thanks for the photo .. its very useful. Looks like I have the correct oil level.

Adam - I like you idea, cut off the old dipstick and use it to plug the hole. I had been using a bit of tape.

New stick ordered.

This is my dip stick. the other bit is in the boot with a pair of long nose pliers. Where did you get the new one from, and will it be the same on a NCK hotwire (350SE)? Be nice to lose the cable tie.

I have a feeling they can be different lengths so be careful.

Also I found out that overfilling really isn't a good idea, I did maybe a pint too much on the last fill and it didn't half run lumpy. So I had to let some out afterwards (which I'll re-use gradually as a top-up).

Makes me wonder, was it the original dipstick? Engine runs and starts fine, oil changed periodically, but a little tappy up top end?????

Top-end tappy is more likely too little oil. mine just ran rough, no tappety sound but I imagine the bores were covered in foamy oil letting more oil into the cylinders.

I have ordered one from Rimmer bros and will check the length against the original.

TVR parts supplier Racetech do one but its 35 ex vat and pack.

Even s/h on bay they seem to go fo 25.

Well its bad news on the Rimmer dipstick. Its too short by about 4 inches.

The only dipstick available on the website is the MGB V8 'Short dipstick'.

Looks like the super expensive option from Racetech and second hand are the only new options.

Thinking outside the box - it's only a dipstick - there must be a hundred car models out there with similar items. Just a matter of finding the right scrapper nearby.

I thought it was an sd1 dipstick? If so there are gisillions of those in scrapers as they all rusted to death.
