I am starting to think what car I might replace my Volvo V70 T5 with (awesome thing).

I hate Diesels and equally autos, but want a car with big power that can hold alot and good for towing, but is fun as bloody quick when you want it to be.

Not really sure there is anything that fits the bill now a days. All Auto and or Diesel now (I'm sure there used to be a "Puke" Smilie...).

Any ideas? Ideally something that can remapped for more power would mean a Turbo, or if not a big V6 or even V8. I'd want high 200's to a bit over 300bhp ideally.

What's the budget and are you looking new or used?

Good point. No not new. Say 4-7 years.less that 75k if on the higher end, (obviously a lot less if younger).

A couple that spring to mind that may be worth a look...

- Mondeo either with 2.0 ecoboost or 2.5T
- Octavia vRS

3 or 5 series possibly too although in the bhp bracket you're looking at I think they'll all be autos...

Maybe not powerful enough but the Subaru Legacy 3.0R Spec B would be a good choice. Not turbo though so options for more power are limited.

There is such a thing as a Vauxhall Insignia VXR estate, though i've never seen one. 320bhp Turbo and 4wd.

Some good ideas here. 2.5T Mondeo a possible. Scoobie too and the Vectra Turbo 4x4 Estate (I'd have to check the size of those).

Pity Beemer and Merc in the larger bodies (3 and C classes too small) binned manuals!

Was there never a Legacy with the 4 pots (say in 2.5 Turbo) with manual?

Porsche Cayenne GTS (and S) were available with manual 'boxes and tow bars. GTS is 400+bhp V8. biggrin

Good idea but not a fan of the Big 4x4 thing.

Wondering what is most limiting in my must have list. Auto or Diesel.

SRT-10.

Not a 4x4 (it's 2wd), 6 speed manual. Lots of power, bloody quick, highly tunable, well over 300hp. Can carry loads, isn't diesel. Very good tow vehicle.

I know of one of them for sale at the moment, it's yellow though so not the most subtle of options!

Not sure what these are rated to tow, but would present another left field option. Plenty of hauling space, although lacking seating. But manual, fast, petrol and tunable.

For more seating the VXR8 would seem a logical option, although not an estate. But should still have a fair amount of space in it.

Only jap domestic market models and they were 2.0 four pots with turbo (ie no 2.5 turbo - U.K. Market legacies with manual are 2.0 four, 2.5 four or 3.0 six)

If you want non Impreza 2.5 turbo there is always the forester sti or 2.5 xt but mostly high mileage these days

I would be concerned about wearing out the clutch when towing!

Should have said Estate.

A good T5 makes well over 300 ponies smile

Was thinking of one of the last of the mk2 V70's in R 4x4 spec, very rare and bit older than ideal, but the perfect car (IHO) for what I need it to do. With 4x4 you can get away with 350bhp in one.

See how mine goes through the rest of the year.

Insignia VXR 4x4 Estate

V70R is a good option I think I'd nab the VXR budget allowing of course.

They are rare but what you want is a 957 Cayenne GTS manual.

Got myself a rare V70R AWD manual. NICE, all the toys, lowish miles and 300bhp before you think about any upgrades.
