This is not too far from me...

I bet there is a 'No win no fee' company behind this somewhere, hopefully the garage take it as far as possible to get her to pay!

Good outcome there.

She saw an opportunity - a soft target, as it were - and went in for the kill.

By the size of the legal bill (circa £70,000, according to the article), it's clear the car dealership weren't just going to roll over and have their tummies tickled.

And now she owes them £70k. Excellent. biggrin

Excellent result. Now they should go after her for their 70 odd grand with the same force as she would no doubt have used against them if her scam had worked.

I expect NIG were paying the legal costs.

Indeed.

I hope the dealership are not further inconvenienced or disadvantaged by an increase in their insurance cover premium.

All she wanted originally was a set of mats and a tank of petrol.

Excellent result, I hope she is forced to pay up every penny of the £70k legal bill too.

She was not defending herself, she was the initiator.

If the garage lost and had to pay out, their insurer NIG would have paid their costs of defending the claim.

In this case however, the cost of defending the claim will be recovered from the losing Claimant. She may well have insurance to pay that if she had an After The Event insurance policy with her solicitors.

ATE are far harder to get nowadays than they used to be a few years ago, primarily to stop this sort of spurious litigation.

Exactly. I do wonder at what kind of advice these people get from their own legal team. I would have thought any half decent solicitor would know this was a case with, at best, limited prospects of success.

I guess whatever 'No win no fee' outfit she was using were hoping for an out of court settlement which would have been a lot less than the £200k claim they somehow came up with

Great stuff.

As a broker, it can sometimes be a challenge to get the insurers to defend these things. They'll often take a view that it's easier to pay out than defend it, which is no good for the client. I'm pleased NIG fought this.

In a vaguely related note, I helped a friend buy an S-Max from there in 2011. He still has it and I'm pleased to report that neither of us sustained injuries whilst there! :-p

Spot on. As far as I am concerned, this is THE main reason for 90% of spurious/made-up/staged-accident claims being made in the first place.

A little more news on this...
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-4634562/Mo...

Nice to see the DM getting her house value in the story!
Once it was posted on the local FB page it became apparent the person in question also owns another property that is rented out, her current tennant of 3 years has apparently been given notice to quit as the lady in the story has to downsize/move in to sell her primary residence to pay off the debt, £20k in 14 days is a LOT to find but play with fire you will end up burnt!
