Hi,

I am French and I will soon come in UK to work for 3 years.
I was wondering what is the best way to buy a car in UK : long-term hire, second-hand vehicule or other solution that I don't know ?
My budget is 400£ per month including insurance.

Thanks for your replies.

I guess you can get a decent car around 250 per month on a lease. There is a thread for it as well. Insurance is quite expensive, but if you are over 25 would be cheaper. Second hand cars are a lot cheaper than anywhere else in the world biggrin

not sure how you would fit the credit search for a lease not being a resident with history here.
Bring your car over with you or buy a car for around £6000 which will do you the term and be easy to sell quickly at a bargain price when you leave..

It may be worth getting some insurance quotes for a fairly generic car, to give a rough picture of how much of your budget will be taken up by those costs.

Also, if you are not aware, the annual taxation of cars in the UK varies greatly with what you buy, as it is based on the exhaust emissions. It can be anything from zero to £500+ per year. You can easily check the cost online though, searching using the registration plate of a car you're interested in.

I agree with the comment above about your credit history influencing whether you would be able to get a lease or similar.

Is this £400 being spent privately from your own income, or is it a budget given to you by your employer to have a car provided for you? That may make a difference.

Really thank you all for your replies.
That gives me a first global view of all the possibilites.

To answer the last question : yes, this is given my my employer.

I have heard also of PCP. What is best between PCP and Lease ?

Thank you again.

If you could persuade your employer to provide a company car (not common in France if I am correct?) that to me would be the best option. I think that you would struggle with a credit search.
