I purchased some sausage rolls at a butchers yesterday.

I had to wait a while while the butcher served several other customers, doing what butchers do handling raw meat including chicken. When it came to my turn there was no washing of hands or any attempted avoidance of cross contamination.

The sausage rolls were individually wrapped but behind the counter. So it's only the wrapping that may be contaminated but of course the wrapping needs to be handled to get at the edible contents.

Should I be worried?

Are you going to take a punt on a reasonable chance of getting food poisoning for a fking sausage roll?

You're only bothered because you saw it. You handle and eat things which are as risky ,if not more so, on a daily basis. Get it down you!

You posted this at 4 in the morning. It sounds like you are pretty worried.

I occasionally wonder how people rack up such high post counts, but never have to wonder for too long.

Let us know how you get on with the sausage rolls. Or please instruct your descendants to inform us.

That's not a high post count.

I don't know the hygiene rating and I haven't eaten any of them yet, they are in the fridge.

I think you should put your house on the market today and find somewhere new. It is the only way to be sure. Possibly even emigrate?

Don't go near the fridge unless you're suited and booted

Have you ever had a Chinese takeaway before? If you have you can probably expect to be safe from eating a sausage roll from a butchers irrespective whose hands have been on it

Two rules for me: Never buy cooked products (ham, pastries, etc.) from a butcher's shop, and never eat salad in an Indian Restaurant. I am typing this sitting on the bog...

Which of the two rules did you break?

Neither - t'was a normal bowel movement, but I thought it might carry a touch of humour. I do have an FOB (faecal occult blood) test to do and that might be fun. It's what I call a poo sticks test... It doesn't detect humour though.

When I was a kid butchers' and grocers' shops had separate cashiers to avoid contamination.

Ours has separate staff for cooked and uncooked. You can pay together, but there is no cross-handling.
