Audi A4 B7 2.0 TDI Crankcase Breather
Discussion
Hi - I have a 193K A4 2.0TDI which has been running a little bit off recently. I noticed the odd puff of blue smoke when cold at low revs. A bit of internet research indicates this can be caused by high crank case pressures due to a blocked breather. True enough, when I open the oil filler cap, there's a hiss. If I put the cap back on and take the cam cover breather pipe off, there's not much coming out - so I think this is pretty conclusive evidence I have a blocked oil mesh in the cam cover.
As a temporary fix/test, I fixed an old crank breather on the dipstick pipe and it's running sweet as a nut again now.
My questions:
1. The cam cover. It seems that on a BPW motor, I can't remove the cam cover without removing all the gubbins on the side (EGR/DPF/manifolds, etc.) and of course everything I need to remove to get to them. Is this right or am I just not pulling hard enough?
2. What parts do I need to fix this? Can you replace the oil mesh/separator in the cam cover or is it part of the cam cover and I need a new cam cover?
Advice appreciated, ta
