Just topped mine up on my Stag...it took just shy of three quarters of a litre. Such an easy job (10 mins) don't know why I didn't do it years ago ! !

It's on my list of things to do, I've got a new pinion seal to fit so that'll be an easy way to drain it out. But realistically I probably won't do it until September or October as I've other things to do and a few more weeks isn't going to make much extra difference.

It's a sealed unit so shouldn't need it - unless it's leaking.
Where most people go wrong is forgetting to change it, I've forgotten how many i've drained off which were black....

A few words of wisdom...

Many older differentials have copper thrust washers, it is essential to only use GL4 gear oil. Use GL5 and the copper washers will disintegrate.

Also make sure the breather hole is clear, if it gets blocked oil will be forced out of the seals.

One of the reasons stag diffs can whine is because they lose their oil through the front oil seal or sometimes the gasket on the back plate. If you notice you lose that oil rather quick and your diff don't whine I would be inclined to fix the leak asap as getting a good stag diff with no whine is harder than you think. Also make sure the breather pin on top of the diff is free moving as this can cause pressure in the diff to blow oil out.
