I am considering getting either (i) a new factory ordered R8 V10 (plus?) or (ii) an older 2008-09 V8 for about 1/3 of the cost. Or (iii) nothing at all for the time being.

As to the older model, here's the thing - I currently have an RSQ3 (2016), which has a 0-60 time of 4.8 seconds and is great fun to drive. Obviously this is a completely different creature to an R8. However, a 2008 V8 with 415hp and 4.2l engine "only" has a 0-60 time of 4.6 seconds. Is it really going to be that different to my current car (based on performance at least)?

If not, then I'd be tempted by the newer model R8, as I'm really after something with performance and fun in a way that's different to the RSQ3.

Your RSQ3 will not attract anything like the looks or attention an R8 does, so avoid one if that's not your thing. The R8 looks stunning, drives fabulously and does everything well. With a proper exhaust it also sounds stunning, I've had some nice cars, I've had faster cars but I've not as yet had anything that feels as special or goes as well as it looks. It's not comparable to anything other than a supercar or similar imho

The 0-60 time is a tiny snippet of how a car feels and drives. I'd suggest going and taking one out as a starting point but even though I've driven neither I'd be pretty sure the R8 will be nothing like your RS3!

Drive one and your reservations will vanish. Why not consider an early V10 if you want more power?

I had a Caterham 620R that did 0-60 mph in 2.79 seconds but I only did launches a couple of times and have never even bothered in my R8.

I sold my 620R but kept my R8 simply as it does everything I want it to; weekend drives, two weeks holiday to the Swiss Alps & Italian Lakes with my wife, numerous trackdays, etc...

The R8 V8 has enough power, handles beautifully and even though it is now a 10 year old design still amazes me how interested people are in them taking photos and videos as you are driving along.

You really won't know until you drive one and then you will see.

Will shop around and perhaps do a test drive.

Oddly, the first generation R8s have the more interesting/classic look. Second gen looks a bit more like a TT. That said, wouldn't mind either.

My choice would be £50k gen 1 with low miles sort of budget.

I had a MK1 V10 manual a few years ago and have just ordered a MK2 V10 Plus 610 Coupe.

When I bought the first one I compared the V8 and V10 back to back and found the V10 to be much quicker with more grunt and midrange.
It really depends if you prefer the sound of a V8 to a V10. Both sound great, even more so with an aftermarket exhaust and the V10 has a very exotic sound
Audi has programmed the ecu in the MK2 V10 to make some great crackles and pops on the over-run which sounds cool.
The interior on the MK2 is much more modern and updated and the new MMI display is very good.
The styling changes between the MK1 and MK2 are very subjective and it's all down to which you prefer.
IMO the MK2 V10 Plus 610 feels even faster than the MK1 I had and in real world country road driving feels just as quick as the McLaren 650S that I'm now selling.

Go and drive some and see what appeals to you the most. They are all great cars to drive and I'm sure you won't be disappointed.

The MK2 is great value for money, with some good deals to be had. The MK2 doesn't seem to be selling as well as the MK1, with some cars sticking on dealer forecourts for ages.
