Hi people, can anyone help please?
I hired a carpenter to build us a new staircase, he seemed like a nice guy and knew what he was talking about. The quote was what we expected so we paid the £1k deposit he'd requested. He then came and did some structural alterations, a days work, and then put up a stud wall which took another day. He was telling us he could do lots of other work for us too, tiling etc. but we said we only wanted hime to do the staircase as agreed. He left that day and said he'd be back the following week to do some other things that weren't included on the original quote. We thought about the other work and decided, being only minor we would do that ourselves, so we told him and said, please just stick to the staircase, we're on a tight budget.
That was it on 21/5/17 and until yesterday, despite numerous calls, emails and texts we hadn't heard from him. In fact I believe the only reason he got it touch is because we left a review about him on google and yell, stating facts, nothing made up, so he made contact, not to apologise but to tell us he was going to take us to court for defamation.
Can anyone tell me, if you leave a review on google or yell, can the recipient sue you for it?
Thank you.

I'd be threatening him with court to recoup my money, unless he was round double time to get the job done.
+1 Start to formalise a deadline in writing so you can measure lack of progress. Also is this a genuine trained Carpenter? As seems strange he was offering to do tiling and other services.

Appeared genuine and trained but I thought the same when he offered to do other jobs too.
The reviews are factual, they state what happened, no more and no less. I was tempted to update them with the latest but didn't want to wind him up any more!
It really comes down to communication, you simply cannot take someone's money and then disappear for weeks without explanation. I wouldn't even dream of doing that but then I'm an honest person.

I'd get a deadline in writing to him, if work hasn't continued by this date (or finished), then court proceedings will be issued to recoup all payments made.
The guy is pissing down your leg. I had many tradesmen in during a house renovation 2 years ago. One of the joiners who had done a bit of work, overheard me saying I was replacing the full boiler and central heating. He said his mate would do it. I asked for a quote and the guy said he couldn't get out for 3 weeks. So I got a family friend, who's a gas engineer to do it at trade prices. This joiner took the mega hump that I had "backstabbed him as his mate was going to do it." He got so irate, he left and never came back for his money he was due.
Some people are strange. They're not happy with what they've been contracted to do, they always want more. I always think those are the dodgy types. They're in to look at a stair case and when they walk into your bathroom "Ah see, the guy that did you tiling isn't a real tiler. He's used this and that. I can fix it and do it this way, only £150." Chancers.

I think (now!) the issue might be..I left a review against him, as opposed to his Ltd company (he's on yell/google as two different entities), so he says it's defamatory against him personally. However, whilst I paid the Ltd company, it was him who did the work, I saw him, I was there!!
He left our house on 21/5/17 having already taken £1k and done two days work, and until yesterday, despite numerous calls, emails and texts in between, asking when he would be back, asking him to talk to us not ignore us, we hadn't heard from him. That's what went wrong, he effectively stole from us
We have a written quote to supply and install a staircase including all structural work, labour and materials.
He said he could tile the en-suite, fit the doors but we politely turned him down, we are on a budget and only wanted him to do the staircase.

What went wrong, why did you leave a bad review, mid work taking place?
What were the small items you decided to do yourself that he was going to do?
Something seems off about your story?
The small items we always planned to do ourselves until he decided he'd like to do them instead, were some tiling and a couple of internal doors, both now done. What were the small items you decided to do yourself that he was going to do?
