VW Transporter - Whats the models to have?

Hi everyone.
I like a transporter and would like a bigger van for my track bike. I would like a day van but not a camper conversion. somewhere to leisure in between track session but not to sleep in.
i am looking at Transporters but i don't know what to look for with regards to most desirable models and best resale value. There seems to be a lot of standard model vans out there that have a new sporty bumper stuck on, a few extra seats and then people want to charge the earth for them!!
Would i be better off finding a van and doing the mods myself or should i look out for a specific model.
Like i said, i wouldn't want to buy something then get stuck with it because it's missing an important option.
If you could educate me, I would appreciate it.
