XK120 Dipstick notches

Silly question, but always wondered why, I have 4 notches on my dipstick, anyone know why ?

Have you tried on Jag-Lovers? lots more XK120 owners there.
I tried having a quick look in the books I have, the picture in the service manual is only a line drawing and only shows 2 marks, but it probably isn't meant to be too detailed. Googling for images the SC Parts dip stick shows lots of marks, I guess it's supposed to show you how much you need to add to get to the top. The picture from XKs Unlimited doesn't show any markings, so I guess as long as it comes out wet you're OK :-)
I'll try firing up XK Data CD to look later, that should have a full set of the all the literature from Jaguar.

Must be a reason for the 4 as opposed to one i would have thought ??

Does it take a certain amount of oil to get from one notch to the next? So it means "add (X) quarts" or similar?

I wonder if it is the original? Some engines have longer dipsticks than others (bigger sumps) and perhaps someone cut new marks on it for his car? Surely the hatchings can't cover both sets of marks?

Tony,the car has the"Bigger deeper sump" so i've been told, and the stick is original as far as i know.
I'm sure its a simple explanation.
