Just discovered some minced beef, four days past its "use by" date, in the fridge. Fancied making a chilli. The OH suggested using lentils, so needless to say the beef is now happily frying in the pan. Wish me luck! biggrin

If it looked OK & smelled OK, then it will be OK to eat, particularly if it is thoroughly cooked.

If it smelt okay you'll be fine.

If it smells ok when you open it it is much less likely to cause you a problem than minced beef inside its date that smells dodgy.

It is frightening how many people rely on dates only, and bi something at 8 in the morning that they would have happily eaten at 23:59 the night before.

Dates are a guide. Your eyes and nose are a much better indicator of if something is fit to eat or not.

My Mrs would rather eat mince that is in date but got left in the boot of a hot car for a couple of hours than mince that is a day over and came straight back from the shop and into the fridge. Bonkers

It seems to be life by numbers now. As long as you're below the number set by 'them' then you're OK no matter what. My daughter won't touch anyhting that's a day past its date though we are not bothered for most things, except perhaps shellfish which doesn't get much slack.

This weekend we ate some Aldi 28 day matured steak that was a week over the UB date.

Tasted great, very tender and still here to type this.

Smell is a great safety feature.

I wonder how much perfectly good food gets binned due to (very cautious) UB dates

Generally I am happy past the expected date if I know it has gone from butchers to fridge quite quickly and it looks ok and does not stink.

It will get cooked well.

If the sausages do not move on their own then on they go.

Yeah, got much less fussy about dates, if it's a bit over maybe cook it a bit longer but generally if it smells right it's fine, we are actually very good at detecting spoilt food, guess it's an evolutionary thing, dogs are not that hot on it but can digest pretty much anything.

I think we are pretty immune to a lot of stuff, we get blindsided when we go abroad as we haven built immunity to their specific bacteria, it's not always down to hygiene being lax.

^^ this. My lodger is the same and it really grinds my gears the amount of perfectly good food that gets binned because it's a day past the date.
By the same token my local Tesco clearly has some serious issues with its cold storage and frequently I see stuff out on the shelves for sale that has turned grey. It very much looks like the people that stack the shelves have 0 idea what food is meant to look like!

As established, better to trust your senses and apply some common sense.

In fact, I'm getting a bit obsessed with buying the reduced 'yellow sticker' stuff M&S, Tescos etc. discount on the last day of the their 'use by' date - it's not that I can't afford the full price (honest, guv), but I treat it as a smug challenge to see how cheap I can get perfectly good stuff for, and challenge my cooking skills to throw the random purchases together into a meal.

Most of that stuff sits around in my fridge for three or more days more as well. Never been ill.
