WTF has happend to Rhyl?
Discussion
Now I know its never been the classiest of places and would hold its own in the council thread but as a kid I remember going the odd time and having fun, also someone I know bought a static on one of the sites about 20 years ago and on the odd occasion we visited them it was ok, not exactly St.Tropez but the kids had fun.

k me, what a difference 20 years make, we arrived there for work yesterday for 2 days, it was like the scene in BTTF where hill valley is a desolate waste ground. How can a popular UK tourist attraction go so down hill so fast, there were more smack heads/tramps/googlies per square yard than a mental assylum. s
t everywhere and dirt that haddn't been touched for the last decade.
I cant see anyone contemplating taking their kids there even for a day out, what a s
t hole.

It's the same story in pretty much every seaside town in the UK. Very low employment = crime = drugs = s
thole.
Doesn't seem half as bad in the south, still some seaside towns thriving.
thole.B&Bs being used to take up the slack and lack of social housing and adult care seems to be behind the problem.
Always struck me as a huge waste. some of these towns are very pretty places which would be much nicer places to live then say Bracknell or Stevenage but they can't attract the commerce.

20 years of cheap foreign holidays and flights.
Why go to Rhyl when you can have a weekend in Amsterdam or a week on the canaries/greece etc cheaper?

Had to go to Margate a couple of months back, booked a hotel as it would have been a 10+ hour drive to go there and back in a day.
Nice enough hotel, a bit run down but would have been amazing 20 years ago. Cost £60 for the night including breakfast - pretty good I thought.
If I stayed for a week though, it would be £420 - not a surprise that quite a few people head to Spain or elsewhere for the same price or less.

Unfortunately a lot of the seaside resorts have declined and the hotels are now bedsits and local authorities use them as a dumping ground for life's losers.
Sorry to say it, but this is probably the right answer - Blackpool is just the same once you leave the seafront area. I've been in Rhyl a few times recently and it has certainly suffered more than most, the crackheads and beggars being a very obvious problem.Rhyl's always been a dump, slot machine central, used to go to Winkup's caravan park in the late 1950's, Colwyn Bay and Prestatyn are just as bad.
Lots of chavs and druggies.
However, nearby Llandudno is lovely (imo), nice seafront decent shops, tram up to the Great Orme, Cable cars and a better class of tourist. (just)
Happily, Snowdonia is a short drive away.

Boscombe was once the best bit of Bournemouth.
Part of the dynamic of decline was, come 1980ish, ironically the legacy of a superb housing stock of beautiful Victorian villas and "gentleman's residences". Underused, surplus to requirements, cheap . . and perfect for conversion to HMOs with a few hundred quid's worth of plasterboard.
Vicious downward spiral kicks in. Bits nearest the sea are still great and highly desirable, but rest of it awash with heroin and the vulnerable preying on the very vulnerable. Walk through the shopping centre and look up at the architecture, though, and be impressed.

t then, God only knows what it's like if it's gone downhill since...Never been specifically to visit Rhyl itself but as the start point for sea fishing, its pretty grim, went for a full English in a cafe and it was full of massive fat dollops eating the biggest breakfast I had ever seen washed down with pints of Stella, parking somewhere was a bit fraught as so many folk looked like your car was about to provide their next fix, lots of tiny houses with big scary dogs, loads of feral kids.
I work in Rhyl on and off, I have done for about 12 years... (Don't live here but spens many many nights here) and I've spent a lot of time there specifically over the last 4 years, personally I think it's got a fair bit better over the last 4 or 5 years. They're putting up a new shopping centre on the site of the old fun fair, which has been boarded up for the last 5 years, and there's been a definite improvement. I don't mind the place at all, it's a small town and there is a few rougher areas but generally as far a sea side towns go I really don't think it's that terrible, my missus is from Fleetwood, I don't wish to cause offense to any cod heads but that is much worse.
The North wales coast area from Llandudno all the way up to Flint is (I think) one of the areas of the country where you can still find a really lovely house within commutable distance to 3 big cities and half a dozen decent sized towns, for reasonable money, the hills just up behind Prestatyn and Colwyn bay contain some really lovely areas to live, I'd happily move there once my kids are done with school (don't want them having to learn bloody welsh!)

And yet in 2016 the tourist industry contributed £1.33billion to Blackpool's economy!mickmcpaddy said:

We were there about 10 years ago and it was like that. We made the mistake of going to the streets behind the 'promenade' to find a chippy and almost got embroiled in a drug-dealing argument. I was glad to (hastily) jump back in the car and push off smartish!
