The wooden floor on my Jeep is on the whole OK,,,why the previous owners drilled so many holes in it I don't know....I can fill them no probs, there is a slight wear mark caused by the drivers heel which is to be expected I know, but underneath there is a thumbprint sized 'weak spot' (not near the heel mark). I really don't feel that this warrants floor replacement...but I ask, is there any benefit in adding another panel underneath the floor or is this inviting problems...ie trapped moisture. Any ideas would be welcomed...
Thanks
Gerry

Hi Gerry

I wouldn't put another layer of anything underneath, it'll just make it rot quicker.

If you can cut the soft bit out then fill it with a ply piece and reinforce the join with fibreglass.

If your geep is watertight (i.e. the inside stays dry) I'd glass the undeneath and keep air space as much as possible inside. If you can clean the underneath of the floor a layer or two of fibreglass where the water/stones from the wheels hit it is a good idea.

See Chris's bit on replacing floors on the tech website.

I replaced my floor with 1/2" ply, underneath I put 4 layers of class, and stuck the floor in place with glass filler underneath and then tape inside. Beware - don't totally seal wood in a fibreglass jacket, it will rot in a year or two as air can't get at the wood.

Good luck, this floor will self destruct in 30 seconds!!!!!!

We had a similar problem and some spare 1/4" alu tread plate so cut out 2 pieces and bolted through floor and into chassis. made a tidy job pics on yahoo forum somewhere. Alu will cut with a heavy duty jigsaw and some oil as a lubricant

I have done both, ie chequer on one jeep and glassed the other (though I did it from above and undersealed)
the ali chequer was the easiest and cut mine using a circular saw! Tungsten blade of course - worked a treat!

In a few areas on my car's floor, the upper ply is soft due to standing water so when dry I will use some Ronseal Wood Hardener (it works well on wooden window sills) before a surface treatment.
