Knocking noise
Discussion
Could you please help. I have a 1999 2.5 Porsche Boxster with only 43000 miles. I have had it extensively serviced by both porsche and Porsche specialists. I has been running very well until today. There is a knocking noise from the engine compartment at around 2000 rpm, its not audible at tick over. I have had other Boxsters where the water pump has gone. I was wondering if this was the beginning of that issue?
It does not sound like a tapping noise, it is coming from the left hand side of the engine looking from the rear. It began today, the reason I thought it might be the water pump is due to the warmer weather we have been having, the engine has gotten very warm, the engine fan came on while sitting still, and the car just feels "off" not as smooth as it has done.
Thank you all for the advice. I have today noticed, after the car has cooled down, it was running at normal temperature, that the car has not lost any coolant, I did start it up once it was cold and the tapping had turned into a rattle. I have had the IMS bearing changed along with the lower oil seal. On the back of noticing no coolant missing I can only assume it must be chain related.
Not likely an IMS related issue, you rarely get any warning, they just let go in a matter of seconds if that. My first 987 developed a knock that sounded heavy, like piston slap, but it was just an empty tappet, I'd had the same sort of thing on another German car previously and just left it idling for 20 mins until it filled up.
Hope you get sorted op, unpleasant feeling when this type of thing crops up.
