Looking for something sporty. Any suggestions?
Discussion
Hello everyone!
I'm a new member and I'm sorry for my bad English. It isn't my native language.
Anyhow, I currently drive Peugoet 406 2.0 HDi 110 from 2002.
It's a pretty decent car. Reliable, comfortable, decent amount of room etc. But now, since I'm a car guy and a got a new job, I'm looking into something more sporty. And this stick on Peugeot suck. Long, not precise. I don't really want to buy a car with this kind of stick anymore.
Things i'm looking for:
- Reliable and not expensive to run. This is my no. 1
- Sporty. It doesn't need to have 300hp,but I would like something with a "kick". So I think something like 150hp and under 1400kg should be fine for a start.
I don't know what to choose. I looked into these cars:
- Alfa GT 1.9 JTDm- I always liked Alfa, this one is one of my favourites. But we all know about quirks and so much little things that go wrong on Alfa. Also, I would even prefer petrol over diesel.
- Prelude 2.0 or 2.2 - Don't know much about it. It should be reliable, atleast 2.0, but I'm not sure about 2.2
- Celica 7. Gen seems like a nice car, but It's most likely 140hp version and I don't really know how it goes
- BMW E46 - Seems well built, but they are so many of them on the road and it's hard to find one that doesn't have extremely high mileage and one that isn't over priced.
What else would you suggest and what are your thoughts on these cars?

- Alfa GT 1.9 JTDm- The 1.9 diesels I have heard to be pretty solid, it will have Alfa niggles though
- Celica 7 - Another good shout, although be mindful, I believe the higher power engines can have some fairly serious oil consumption issues later on in life.
- BMW E46 - Personally I don't trust older, tired BMWs, I know multiple people with bimmers of this era and both are money pits
No idea about Preludes either, I have heard they are fairly reliable though.
MX5? Don't get much cheaper to run than that, mk2.5s deliver 140bhp at 1100kg so fall well within your power/weight requirement and are extremely fun to chuck about. Reliable but watch out for rust, buy on condition rather than mileage as the engines are pretty lazy and will literally go on for ever in their stock form.
