Can anyone recommend some rear screens, the type that clamp onto the front headrest bars would be ideal. They must be HDMI and actually able to do 1080 HD which so far seems to be impossible to find. All the ones I have found are much lower resolution. I'm sure they must be out there but damned if I can find any.

10" -12" screens would be ideal.

Hi,

I haven't checked in a while, but I don't think any of the premium and high quality brands do 'true' full 1080p headrest monitors in 7/8/9/12 inch sizing for automotive use. Main reason would be that at the usual distance for viewing, there's not much perceptible difference in the quality of the video content. Add to that, it's 'mainly' kids who watch from the backseat, then given many will be perhaps 2-7+ years old, they're also not really going to notice the difference. From those 7+ ages, many kids get given a phone or tablet.

That leads me onto suggesting that it'd be much better to use the headrest clamps that can hold a 7/8/9/10 inch tablet with a true HD display resolution. I did this a few years ago in my car

I used a 3 Wi-Fi dongle so that each tablet could view independent content, saving any squabbles. Nothing to cut, easily removed and fitted back, the tablet has many more uses than dedicated headrest monitors and you can take the tablet away once at the final destination. Those were Dell 7 inch tablets in the pictures and long since sold those. I'll soon be looking for a good sleek 10 inch tablet with bluetooth for which I can get a pair of again.

Cheers, Dennis!

Thanks for the very detailed suggestion, ideal in my Mrs's car and I think we will go that way for hers, very neat solution with minimal wires and can use the in car wifi. Unfortunately mine is a long wheelbase A8 and you just cannot reach the touch screens from the seats comfortably (or at all when you are 4!). I think I found some yesterday after trying many different combinations of words on EBay, just need to see what the quality is like though, hope they are not nasty Chinese rubbish but they claim to be 1920x1080 so we will see.

Hi,

Post a link up to the ones you've found. Usually, when you see a seller on ebay mentioning 'Full HD' or 'Supports Full HD' you'll 'think' it's the actual '1080p' screen resolution. It usually isn't once you read the specifications which often in smaller and lighter fonts. There you'll typically see the 800x480 the actual resolution the panel is. As usual with low grade, cheap chinese electronics on ebay etc, the marketing 'claims' a lot, but what the product actually 'delivers' is mediocre!

Maybe there is indeed a 'budget' priced product that has a physical panel of 1900x1080!

Cheers, Dennis!

How about looking at caravan or motorhome units as they are often small but hd and hdmi.

Hi,

Thanks for the link, and yes, that brand 'Xtrons' is low grade/quality chinese electronics, which is what you didn't want. Hopefully, these units will be relatively decent and last well for you. Perhaps update once you've had a few weeks with them and can test out for viewing angles and screen colour/image quality etc and then the same over the next 3,6 and 12+ months etc.

Cheers, Dennis!

Immediate impression is good. Nice crisp display and according to the FTV sticks its in 1080. The pics dont do them justice. Install is easy and no rattles. I have firetv sticks plugged in for the kids and the video quality is fine. As for longevity, we will see. not like a top brand tv but bright enough and no blurs or noise.
