"Importing" a car that is already in the UK
Discussion
A good friend of mine has a property in Spain and he needs a left hand drive car. Apparently it's easier to take a UK registered car down there at the moment than buy one locally. I don't know why but I can guess insurance or tax is probably the reason...
There are several EU registered cars in London for sale.
Please could somebody who's done it tell me what's involved in buying and registering one of these in the UK? Is it much more difficult than a regular car? What are the pitfalls? Does it take a lot longer than over here?
One of the more interesting cars is already Spanish registered, I don't know if that would make it worse.

Buying it is the same as normal. Hand money over, get keys and paperwork back. There are several EU registered cars in London for sale.

Registering it... You need to do a NOVA declaration with HMRC within 14 days of the car arriving in the country... Then it's just the normal V55/5 procedure - there's umpteen threads.
Insurance. MOT if it's over 3yo. CoC or IVA if it's under 10yo. Send money with paperwork. Wait. Get plates made. Drive.
But it seems a bit pointless to UK register it if he's going to take it to Spain - just register it straight there.
Thanks, as I thought. As long as the NOVA is filled in it should be OK. The only odd bit is the NOVA in 14 days if it's already here but I suppose the date of purchase becomes the date of "invoice".
The reason for the UK bit is because it is easier for him as a Brit to get the insurance and tax sorted out here as opposed to there. Once they've settled into the new house properly it should be fine but as you can imagine life is turmoil at the moment.
In the meantime he bought a UK registered A4 Quattro, which looks like a good one if expensive for age.

If it was brought in by a non-resident as a temporary import, then I'd presume the 14 days starts from the point that the importer became resident or decided the car was remaining here...Gassing Station | Car Buying | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
