Future mapped out ?

We had a debate about this over the weekend.

Me and some friends all seemed to have varying opinions. Most strangely, one particular friend is convinced that from the day we're born, the future is pre-mapped. Not only this but he doesn't believe in the supernatural or God.

I'm not saying I do either but is he being:

a) Hypocriticle.

b) Easily confused.

c) Used for medical/mental research and has declined to tell us.

Nope. The universe is not deterministic and genuine randomness happens all over the place.

If he feels that his life is mapped out for him, who does he think has mapped it out?

If he is ruling out the existance of a God or any other supernatural being, I've no idea who he thinks could have spent the time to plan all his events.

Are any of them in the future and can you directly affect any of those?

I am just trying to imagine what his life would be like if you completely ruined his belief of life being determenistic.

If he has a preconcieved idea of where his life is heading then you as a mate have a duty to change it, surely?

I see your point now, Plot. The thing is, he is a little confused as a human.

He is of the train of thought that he doesn't know whats gonna happen even though he thinks its all pre-determined. As a result, and for example, he'll gladly drive far too quickly and when warned of danger he'll say, if its gonna happen, its gonna happen.

I suggest that surely he can lessen the chance of spinning off the road is he slows down. He just laughs and speeds up.

Well next time you see him, offer him a cup of tea and when he says yes, smack him in the mouth.

When he asks why you did, just say 'dunno, pre determined I suppose'

I'm sure he'll get sick of it after a while...
