Apologies in advance for the somewhat vague nature of this one, I'm asking on behalf of my brother-in-law who isn't very enthusiastic about cars and lives 100s of miles away.

His 190,000 mile A3 is due an MOT and when he took it to his usual garage they said "you might as well scrap it" rather than pay what it will cost to get it through the MOT.

The summary of issues seems to be:

1. Both front CV joint rubbers need replacing
2. Brake light bulb needs replacing
3. "blue smoke from exhaust" - likely to fail emissions.

Now I can't understand exactly what happened but from what I gather they didn't put it through the MOT because it's not due immediately and the smoke was a concern to the tester, apparently it's not a smoke-screen, just a puff.

I'm not familiar with these cars or the 1.6 engine but based on what I do know I think it's a non-turbo lump, symptoms to me would suggest worn rings or valve stem seals, I'm inclined more towards the seals.

He needs the car for another 6 months or so until he can afford to replace it and basically needs it to get through the MOT. It seems to run OK and doesn't use an excessive amount of oil.

Based on the incredibly limited information I've given do any internet experts what to take a stab at possible causes and rough prices to remedy them as cheaply as possible.

I'm not suggesting any sawdust in the gearbox type solutions but if anyone knows of any common points of failure on high mileage VAG 1.6 engines that can be fixed cheaply please can you share them? I've suggested he gets the CV boot rubbers sorted somewhere (£40 in parts plus an hour labour?), sorts the bulb himself, washes the car, fills the screenwash, checks the wipers and puts in some Wynn's Stop Smoke and then takes it to a council MOT place.

Alternatively any recommendations of trustworthy places in the Farnham / Aldershot area that can hold his lazy hand would be great.
